College of Science & Engineering / School of Mathematics
Guaranteed Hours Contract (minimum of 20 hours in academic year 2024-25)
Fixed term: until 31st August 2025
Applications are invited for tutors within the School of Mathematics. Candidates will be offered a guaranteed minimum offer of hours and these roles require in person attendance on campus.
In this role you will facilitate the provision of small group workshop-style sessions, while also supporting a range of other elements of teaching and technical demonstrator support. You will have excellent communication skills, the capability to facilitate and lead student groups, and other relevant teaching skills.
The School of Mathematics has a well-developed and exciting portfolio of programmes operating across the mathematical sciences and at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. The portfolio aims to educate students in Mathematics and essential skills in critical thinking and data analysis, which are critical to employability for our graduates.

Typically, we require more tutors for our pre-Honours (year 1 and 2) courses, and so role holders should expect to be involved in provision in those courses. We also have particular needs in courses in data science, programming, statistics and probability.

Candidates will have a sufficient understanding of the topics under discussion in the courses and programmes that they are interested in working on, along with the relevant technical knowledge and skills for those courses and programmes.
The successful candidates should also be able to demonstrate the skills required to facilitate workshop provision within the School of Mathematics (relevant training will be provided). This may include:
Working directly tutoring students in small group settings and one-to-one, helping them with course materials and questions.
Guiding and moderating online / in-class discussions on learning technology platforms by monitoring student questions, etc.
Supporting the tutoring of programming and computing in classes where students use either Python, R or another of the computing languages in use in the School.
Marking weekly hand-in work, student quizzes, assisting in exam marking or other assessment marking as appropriate.
Supporting the administration of classes including the support of student workshops, creating events on learning technology platforms, and starting/stopping session recordings as might be appropriate for particular classes.
