Job description

You'll provide a warm welcome to visitors when they want to hire a boat, helping them have a safe and enjoyable time on the river. This role is physical and is based in the open air most of the time. You'll be working as part of a team of Active Outdoor Assistants, as well as a wider property team of staff and volunteers.
This role is based on annualised hours, where the amount of hours you work each month may vary, however your salary will be paid in equal instalments over the year. You'll work 180 hours over the duration of the contract. Rowing boat hire operates daily during the holidays, but only at weekends in between, with the season lasting from the start of April until the end of October. In addition, the boat hire may close if the weather or river conditions are unsuitable. This may mean that the number of shifts varies a lot week by week, from none to five.
Rowing boat hire has been a popular feature at Flatford for over 100 years. The Active Outdoors Team are based at our rowing boat pontoon in the Granary Garden and are dedicated to ensuring visitors have a safe and enjoyable time on the river. You'll be demonstrating the National Trust values and behaviours and delivering brilliant customer service every day you work. You'll work closely with out Active Outdoors Co-ordinator and other key property staff, including the Welcome Manager and Site Manager.
As an Active Outdoor Assistant, your main focus will be welcoming visitors to the rowing boat hire pontoon at Flatford and helping them to safely enjoy their time on the river. You will be part of a team of five people, co-ordinated by our Active Outdoors Co-ordinator.
Operating the boat hire will involve setting up the stall in the morning, selling tickets, providing safety information, helping people safely in and out of the rowing boats, closing the boat hire in the evening and undertaking essential boat cleaning and maintenance. You'll be asked to take on associated tasks, such as litter picking, table clearing and occasional cleaning. The role is very physical and involves a lot of standing and bending. In addition, you'll be working on a floating pontoon and will have to move boats at times, so being comfortable on and near water is essential. You'll be expected to wear a life jacket at all times whilst working on or near the water. You'll be provided with essential health and safety instruction and taught how to row a boat if needed.
You may be asked to assist other teams, such as the Welcome and Service Team and Food and Beverage Team. In addition, you will work closely with our volunteers.
We'd love to hear from you, if you're:
customer focused with an understanding of the importance of great service
well organised and adaptable
a team player, but can also work on own initiative
willing to learn new skills
have a positive attitude
understanding of different access requirements and how to assist people
