Job overview

The Assistant Director of Nursing for Safeguarding Children and Cared for Children will provide expert professional safeguarding leadership and assurance to the organisation in regards to Safeguarding children, young people, Cared for Children and maternity services across the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust.

The post holder will provide leadership and direct line management to the Named Nurses and midwife for Safeguarding Children, Cared for Children and Maternity service for each care organisation within the Northern Care Alliance

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support the Associate Director of Nursing for Safeguarding in the delivery of the Northern Care Alliance’s Statutory Safeguarding responsibilities, leading a high performing, responsive safeguarding service that focuses on the safeguarding, health and wellbeing of Children and young people. They will work alongside the Assistant director of nursing (ADN) for Safeguarding adults to develop a think family approach to safeguarding across the Trust.

The post holder will provide expert leadership to the Safeguarding Children and Care for Children agendas and safeguarding in maternity services for the Northern Care Alliance.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This vacancy is open to those who have a current NMC PIN to practice as an Registered Nurse or Midwife in the UK, or those who are currently enrolled on a course which means they expect to receive their full NMC PIN within the next 3 months. Please note an NMC PRN PIN is not a full NMC PIN and would not fulfil the essential criteria for this role.

The NCA can no longer accept applications from International Nurses and Midwives who are yet to complete all competencies needed to receive a full NMC PIN to practice in the UK as we have paused our OSCE programme indefinitely.   • NMC Registered Nurse or Midwife or Specialist Community public health nurse

Qualifications

Essential criteria
    • First degree or equivalent in a health related topic
    • Masters Qualification (or working towards) in safeguarding or related subject or equivalent experience.
    • Leadership or management Course
    • Training on Mental Capacity Act MCA

Knowledge, training and experience

Essential criteria
    • Five years experience of which 3 years experience in Safeguarding at a senior level in nursing / midwifery
    • Evidence of extensive expert professional knowledge in area supplemented by specialist managerial / leadership training and CPD
    • Experience in attending and participating in multi-agency partnership forums representing own organisation on safeguarding matters
    • Evidence of relevant involvement in meeting clinical governance objectives
    • Experience of dealing with highly complex safeguarding cases and incidents involving children, young people and families
    • Evidence of implementing and translating policy/ governmental recommendations into operational practice
    • Experience in dealing with highly contentious and emotive information and advising on management of sensitive cases
    • Extensive knowledge of national safeguarding legislation and policies
    • Ability to work with senior managers to influence and implement recommendations from Child Safeguarding Practice reviewsand Domestic homicide reviews and contributing to Safeguarding adult Reviews when required.
Desirable criteria
    • Development of safeguarding pathways, standards and service models
    • Good working and strategic knowledge of MCA and understanding of application to the court of protection for Children and Young people under 18 years
    • Understanding of arrangements for Deprivations of Liberty safeguards for adults and those deprivations relevant to Children.

Skills and abilities

Essential criteria
    • Able to communicate highly complex and sensitive information to improve outcomes and practice
    • Evidence of persuasive and strong influencing skills and the ability to manage conflict
    • Ability to analyse complex health and safeguarding information to support liaison legal services where necessary
    • Evidence of effective people management and leadership skills
    • Effectively and professionally challenge other professionals and senior leaders to ensure the needs of the child are paramount in decision making
    • Proven record of leading and effectively managing change both but within staff groups but also of systems across organisations
    • Ability to translate complex safeguarding information in reports and direct escalations to very senior managers to ensure messages are clearly understood and acted upon.
    • Ability to raise concerns internally and externally to ensure children, young people and vulnerable groups are appropriately safeguarded
