Job description

How you'll make a difference

You will make a difference by working with adults who may require social care services whist in prison. You will assess their social care, functional and health needs, and work with them to create a support plan, aimed at promoting their independence and meeting their goals in order for them to manage the requirements of daily life. 
 
There are three prisons in South Gloucestershire – HMP Leyhill, HMP Ashfield, and HMP Eastwood Park. HMP Leyhill and HMP Serco Ashfield accommodate male prisoners transferred from other prisons. HMP Eastwood Park is a female prison with generally a younger population with a wide range of complex needs including substance misuse and mental health needs.
 

Salaries are offered at points within these bands depending on experience:

  • Social Worker: £33,945 - £36,648
  • Advanced Social Worker: £38,223 – £41,418

What will you be doing? 
 
  • You will be working with people who require social care services within the Prison setting to ensure independence is maintained as much as possible and outcomes are clear, monitored and reviewed. 
  • You will deliver genuine person-centred, strengths-based support.  Focusing on those we work with telling us how we will make the biggest difference to them.  You will use your creativity to deliver the best outcomes for the individual. 
  • You will implement, review, and monitor actions and outcomes, outlining needs in line with individual care plans and amend and change if needed.
  • You will work in line with best practice legislation, policy and guidance to promote the wellbeing and dignity of the individual.

As an Advanced Social Worker you will be required to:

  • Support students on placement as an experience Practice Educator
  • Be fully up to date with the core training expectations as an Advanced Social Worker
  • Use examples of research and evidence-based resources to enhance practice and share learning with team (e.g. use of Research in Practice / other online resources).

What we need from you

  • You will either have a degree in Social Work and be registered with Social Work England or be in your final year of your Social Work degree. 
  • You will have well developed interpersonal and communication skills to be able to carry out assessments and communicate findings and risks to other colleagues.
  • You will have a good level of general IT skills and the ability to use, or be trained in the use of, appropriate specialist in house software packages.
  • You will demonstrate knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice, processes and procedures.
  • You will need to be able to work under the security regimes of the Prisons and be willing to complete the essential vetting, security and personal protection training.
  • You must be able to work independently as well as a range of professionals based within the prisons and work dynamically often in a challenging environment.
  • You will be a problem solver, confident about making important decisions and understand asset and strength-based approaches to adult social care. 
Advanced Social Worker:
 
  • We will require you to have a minimum of 2 years post qualification experience.
  • You will have evidence of meeting the essential (and desirable where possible) criteria for the role of Advanced Social Worker or in South Gloucestershire council.
  • A clear commitment to Continuous Professional Development (CPD).
 
Please note that due to the nature of this role it is a requirement of employment that an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is obtained for this post.
 

You will be expected to travel throughout the authority and surrounding area so must have a full valid driving licence with regular access to a vehicle, or have alternative appropriate means of travel.
