Afesp Research Software Engineer

The post holder will be responsible for supporting the newly established Advancing the Frontiers of Earth System Prediction (AFESP) research programme at the University of Reading in partnership with the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), the UK Met Office (UKMO), and the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS).They will also be closely involved in both computational and data science elements of the programme with primary focus on testing and support for the ECMWF IFS model, working with NCAS-CMS on equivalent aspects of the UKMO UM and JEDI models, and related codes (including those necessary for analysis and data management) on AFESP computational platforms that include ECMWF, JASMIN, UKMO, ARCHER2, and possibly a new UK Exascale machine. The role holder will collaborate and develop relationships with climate scientists, Research Software Engineers, and computational modellers from partner organisations.You will have: At least three years Software Engineering experience since first degree (as a programmer or within a research role). Strength in modern Software Engineering practice. Knowledge of fundamentals of HPC data management. Knowledge of how to run and debug high-performance numerical simulation and/or coupled models. Ability in implementing complex computational schemes in computer code. Software development in a parallel programming environment. An aptitude for working in interdisciplinary research teams. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
