AHRC-funded Early Career and Mid-Career Scholar Development Opportunity

Email contact: ASaiL@gold.ac.uk Application deadline: 17:00 BST, 30 August 2024 Applications are open to become a member of the 12-person scholar’s network of the 24-month AHRC-funded project, Abolition Song and its Legacies (ASaiL). Successful applicants will be mid- or Early Career scholars from one of four fields – music, history, literature, and the visual arts – who each will be mentored by a senior scholar in that field: Dr Berta Joncus (music), Prof. Matthew J. Smith (history), Prof. Joan Anim-Addo (literature), and Dr Sarah Thomas (visual arts). The network will be hosted by the British Library. It will meet for three morning seminars in each of the two project years to help each scholar develop a chapter for an essay collection to be published after the project’s completion. As a network scholar, you will make a presentation at each of the project’s six seminars, and take part in exchanges with other scholars addressing the little known repertory of Abolition song. You will share with fellow network members your in-progress book section and receive feedback from them, and guidance from the senior scholars. PI Berta Joncus will set session topics in advance, according to participants’ individual research interests. You will receive and draw on an ASaiL study pack containing audio, visual and print materials about Abolition song. No prior knowledge of this material is expected or required. You will attend and lead public discussion at the project’s concerts of Abolition song, to take place at London’s Handel Hendrix House on the evenings of seminar days. These dates are: Thursday 9 January 2025, Monday 19 May 2025, and Monday 8 September 2025. Travel expenses will be paid, and light snacks supplied at the network meetings.
