Airfield Escorting Grounds Maintance Operative

About the role

The primary focus of this role is to provide a dedicated escorting service across the airports operational areas in support of the development team. Additional escorting maybe provided in support of the airfield projects team and other airfield operations departments when not on development related escort duties. Much of the work will be leading vehicles on manoeuvring areas and ensuring escorted personnel comply with security escorting restrictions.

Secondary duties will be in support of our grounds and habitat maintenance activities to the areas on and around the airport. Much of the work is outdoors and involves manual handling and operation of equipment, for which full training is provided. Works undertaken in the airside environment are to comply with Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) regulatory requirements and in accordance with the aerodromes licence to operate.

This important work focuses on habitat and grounds upkeep and preservation in line with regulatory and local habitat and wildlife requirements. The role embraces various general maintenance activities, within an organisation which offers a great career opportunity for the right person.

Reporting to the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor your work includes escort duties, summer and winter operational support functions. You will be required to undertake training to operate wide range of vehicles, equipment and plant associated with agricultural, maintenance and snow clearing work.

Safety Accountability & Responsibility:

Health and Safety: Health and safety regulation, legislation, policy and procedure and the responsibility of workers. Knowledge of hazards and working to strict health, safety, quality and environmental (HSQE) processes particularly appropriate to aerodrome and horticultural sites. Display knowledge and understanding of safety principles and practices. Ensure all individual training records are completed and maintained.

Operational: Compliance with all relevant CAA aerodrome operational, driving and radio regulations.

Environmental; Disposal of waste in accordance with HSE Hazardous Waste requirements and environmental best practice. Prevention and control of local pollution incidents, control of watercourses.

Tools: Equipment and machinery; including maintenance and regular checks of these items to ensure they remain in good working order. Legal requirement of training by a competent person and familiarity with operator training and certification requirements.

Plant health: Basic pest and disease identification, symptoms and control methods including adherence to HSE Code of Practice for Using Plant Protection Products.

Main Duties, Key Tasks:

  • Maintain the skills necessary to undertake Airside Escorting of Third Parties.
  • Ensuring that close communications are maintained with the ASU, ACC & Air Traffic Control.
  • To complete appropriate documentation as required, i.e. inspection reports, oversight of tasks and job reports.
  • Maintain a working knowledge and understanding of aerodrome development and safety management systems applicable to Birmingham Airport.
  • Responsible for the safe operation of activities carried out by Birmingham Airport and non-Birmingham Airport teams resulting from maintenance activities participate in the control of works processes ensuring that they are fit for purpose and liaison with stakeholders.

  • Grounds and habitat maintenance activities on and around the airport site, repairs/rehabilitation of grass and amenity areas, assist with the maintenance and cleaning of the airports flood, pollution systems and general site cleaning/maintenance.
  • Assist in maintaining the airside grassland and habitat in accordance with CAA regulatory requirements to ensure for the safe operation of aircraft including minor repair work.
  • Carry out planned maintenance, inspections and repairs to the airport grounds on/around the airport site and its associated infrastructure including airfield watercourses.
  • Carry out safety checks of mechanical plant, equipment and infrastructure
  • Assist in the health & safety activities as required including; risk assessments, method statements, inspection reports / log books, stores requisitions, vehicle daily inspection reports, job reports.
  • Assist in the maintenance for all facilities. Including trees, grass, hedges and paths, including leaf collection, litter picking, weed spraying, mowing, trimming, hedge cutting and general repairs.
  • Adherence to BAL’s habitat management plan in accordance with CAP772.
  • Planting, plant growth and development; including basic irrigation methods, planting methods and identifying plant deficiencies. Install various soft-landscape materials e.g. shrubs, trees, herbaceous, bedding, grass areas and seed. This will include site preparation, planting, sowing, turfing, preparation of seed beds and mulching.
  • Operational support including landside and airside anti-icing as instructed by ADM, operating BAL’s in-house line painting machine, FOD clearance and prevention
  • Collect and deliver materials from stores / suppliers / assist with site deliveries and ensure running stocks of materials are maintained and available.
  • Assist in planned and reactive maintenance activities
  • Operate and drive specialised equipment and vehicles
  • Operation of BAL’s in house line painting machine ensuring all airside markings are laid in accordance with CAA requirements. Undertaking landside line marking activities as directed by the ASM.
  • Clearance and prevention of Foreign Object Debris (FOD) in accordance with BAL’s FOD Prevention Programme
  • Assist with de-icing of passenger walkways/ roadways, snow clearing driving specialist equipment (training provided) and snow dump removal/ relocation as per BAL’s Snow Plan.
  • Undertake any duties commensurate with the grading of the post which may be determined from time to time.
