Job description

Salary: £28,119 up to £37,492 dependent on experience

Contract Type: Permanent – Full Time

Security Level: SC

We are the UK's aviation and aerospace regulator and recognised as a world leader in its field. Our activities are diverse, enabling the aviation industry to meet the highest safety standards, and we pride ourselves on our ability to adapt to the constantly evolving aviation environment.

The Role
The CAA has a duty to ensure that the utilisation of the UK’s airspace is monitored, that the industry is updated, and that safety is maintained. To this end, our Airspace Utilisation team is responsible for the coordination and notification of relevant industry partners regarding Unusual Aerial Activity and Obstacle Notification. This is done through an online system called Military-Electronic Aeronautical Messaging Service, MilEAMS. Unusual activity and obstacles are defined as generally hazardous activities that could pose a risk to other air users and can cover anything from flying displays to cranes.

As an Airspace Utilisation Operations Assistant, it would be your role to review incoming applications and plot their impact on the surrounding airspace, or aero structures. Once this is complete you will draft and qualify notifications such as, NOTAM’s Aeronautical Information Circulars (AIC) or Airspace Co-ordination Notices (ACN). These notifications will be published online so that flight planning professionals can be made aware of their impact.

This is a fast paced, technical orientated and highly varied role that is perfect for someone coming from a flight planning background. The function it sits at the heart of the CAA’s duty to the aviation industry and the public. Its function is vital to ensuring a safe and well-planned use of UK airspace and the subject matter is both interesting and challenging.

About You

To be considered for the role you must:

  • Possess some prior experience working with aeronautical charts, latitude & longitude, or grid referencing
  • Are a capable and efficient communicator, bother written and verbally, with an inquisitive mind set
  • Experience with MS Office, SharePoint, Google Earth as well as other technical information systems
  • Some prior knowledge of airspace and its regulation from either a civilian or military context

What Can We Offer You?

If you have, at some point in your career, integrated with the flight planning or airspace utilisation process and want to grow a career in this area, this is a phenomenal opportunity. The role offers you the first step on a ladder that will see you develop personally and technically.
