Job description

About Us:

THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF INDEPENDENT LIVES

Adult Social Care in Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories, where our passionate, caring and committed professionals do brilliant work every day.

Mrs D was frail and unwell. Her son was her main carer, but he wasn’t coping. We stepped in to help, but they were hostile to outside agencies. They’d always lived together and were terrified they’d be split up. Our Social Worker did a great job persuading Mrs D to get hospital treatment and a temporary stay in a care home. In an epic effort throughout COVID, she gained the son’s trust and sorted all the repairs, carers and nurses needed so that Mrs D could come home to live with her son. We also got Mr D regular respite and a personal budget awarded in recognition of him as her carer. After all, there’s nothing more important than living the life you want.

The Role:

As a Social Worker you can make your own powerful contribution to Westminster’s success. You’ll be working with adults who have mental health issues, so you’ll assess their needs and the risks they might face in their day-to-day lives, and generate and review care and support plans. Identifying suitable carers and any safeguarding issues that might arise, you’ll also maintain up-to-date records of your work, including entering data on the IT systems used by us and our partners.

Committed to keeping up-to-speed with the latest developments in legislation, policies and procedures, and ready to attend local social work forums, you’ll use supervision sessions with your managers to organise your workload and boost your personal development. We’ll also expect you to contribute to social work and multi-disciplinary team meetings, ward rounds, liaison groups, case reviews and other relevant meetings.

When you’re registered as an Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) with the City of Westminster, you’ll contribute towards our duty system of managing Mental Health Act requests, referrals and assessments. We’ll also expect you to undertake AMHP-related training, act as a Practice Assessor for AMHP and other profession-specific students, take responsibility for decision making and – if qualified as a Best Interest Assessor –  help to manage BIA assessments.

Please refer to the Job Description for more information

About You:

With a degree in Social Work or its equivalent, and registration with Social Work England, you’ll have an Approved Mental Health Professional qualification or be keen to train for this. It’s important that you have well developed experience of working with adults from a range of ethnic and cultural groups, and you should also possess post-qualification experience of working with people with severe and enduring mental health problems.

You’ll be working as a key member of a multi-disciplinary team, so we’ll look for excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as an empathetic understanding of the different levels of disadvantage which can affect diverse communities. It’s vital that you have a good understanding of current legislation and guidance, and you’ll also be ready to establish excellent working relationships with other teams and external agencies.

Capable of prioritising your timetable and working positively in a potentially stressful environment, you’ll have a flexible attitude to your practice and be willing to occasionally extend your working day if required. Dedicated to treating our service users with respect and dignity, and with a culturally sensitive approach which considers the needs of the whole person, we’ll also expect you to be ready to teach, mentor and assess our junior staff and other learners.
