Job Title: Animal Keeper
Location: Puxton Park
Job Type: Full Time, Temporary Contract
Reports to: Head of Animals
Job Summary:
Animal Keepers are responsible for the care, health, and well-being of the animals at Puxton Park. This position involves a wide range of duties related to animal husbandry, habitat maintenance, and visitor education. The Animal Keeper plays a crucial role in ensuring the welfare and conservation of the animals under their care.
Key Responsibilities:
· Animal Care and Husbandry:
· Feed, water, and provide appropriate nutrition to animals following established dietary guidelines.
· Monitor and maintain animal enclosures to ensure they are clean, safe, and environmentally enriched.
· Administer medications and treatments as directed by the veterinarian or senior staff.
· Observe and record animal behaviour, health, and reproductive activities.
Environmental Enrichment:
· Create and implement enrichment activities to promote mental and physical stimulation for animals.
· Design and maintain habitat structures and elements to enhance the well-being of the animals.
· Foster natural behaviours and social interactions among the animals.
Health and Welfare:
· Collaborate with the veterinary team to monitor and assess the health of animals.
· Recognise and respond to signs of illness or distress in animals.
· Assist with routine medical procedures and emergency responses.
Breeding and Conservation:
· Support breeding programs and the conservation efforts of endangered or threatened species.
· Assist in the care of neonates and young animals as needed.
· Document and maintain records related to breeding and conservation activities.
Visitor Education:
· Educate visitors about the animals, their habitats, and conservation efforts.
· Participate in public presentations, guided tours, and outreach programs.
· Answer questions and provide information about the animals and their role in conservation.
Safety and Facility Maintenance:
· Follow safety protocols to ensure the well-being of both animals and staff.
· Assist in the maintenance and repair of animal enclosures and facilities.
· Adhere to animal care standards and regulatory guidelines.
Qualifications:
· The main qualification would be a level 3 BTEC in Animal management or equivalent, 2 years experience (paid or voluntary) and a full UK driving licence.
· Previous experience working with animals in a zoo, wildlife sanctuary, or similar setting is highly desirable.
· Knowledge of animal behaviour, nutrition, and husbandry techniques.
· Strong communication skills for interacting with colleagues, visitors, and volunteers.
· Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
· Physical fitness and the ability to lift heavy objects and work with potentially dangerous animals.
· Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
