Post: Animal Welfare Technician
Salary Grade: Band 8 – £17,685-£19,526
Responsible to: Head of Department – Life Sciences
Key Purpose
To comply with and respect the legal duty of care of all animals under animal health and welfare legislation; maintaining high standards of health, welfare and hygiene at all times.
To contribute to the curriculum needs of the animal care department; facilitating student development by supervising practical sessions and activities.
To be committed to all aspects of training and professional development related to the animal industry and curriculum.
Duties & Responsibilities

F Follow standard operating procedures to carry out routine husbandry of animals, always ensuring a high degree of Animal Welfare: preparation and delivery of
approved diets, cleaning, maintaining, and design/development of animal accommodation, and ensuring conditions are suitable in terms of health and safety, and welfare.
Ensure a high degree of animal health by carrying out daily health and behaviour
G monitoring, maintaining reporting and records, and administering veterinary treatment directly as advised/instructed.
Ensure that the animal unit and associated areas are kept in a tidy and orderly
H state, in line with current industry and college standards.
Maintain and record the condition of materials, consumables and equipment via
I stock taking and requesting of ordering activities; to ensure safe use and availability to meet work and curriculum requirements.
Work to and report on allocated budget, maintaining cost effectiveness at all
J times to ensure efficiency.
Ensure that safe systems of working and husbandry best practice protocols/procedures are implemented and adhered to by staff, students and
K volunteers. To be maintained across the unit in line with industry, legislative, and curriculum requirements. Reporting any accidents or incidents promptly and correctly in line with college procedures.
Assist the teaching team and unit manager to ensure the unit is a flexible and
L effective resource and is developed in line with industry, legislative, and curriculum standards and requirements.
Demonstrate, in an informative and educational way, skills to students and supervise students during practical sessions as they practice skills to recognised

industry and curriculum standards. Ensuring that all students are fully supported, and their individual needs are met.
Plan and facilitate work experience sessions for students that support and embed
N the curriculum requirements.
Ensure that student behaviour is appropriate for the activity in which they are
O engaged and where this is not, take the appropriate steps to liaise with the teaching team to work towards a positive outcome.
Assist in promotional activities for the department, be able to contribute to
P college marketing and open events which may occur during evenings and at weekends.
Provide support for practical sessions on the unit; assist with the setting up of
Q materials, equipment, and resources in liaison with the teaching team.
Attend college-wide staff development activities to contribute to the
R improvement of student experience and outcomes, demonstrating a high degree of commitment, belief and pride in the college and the college’s vision.
Attend curriculum activities/meetings to seek new ways to improve the working
S and learning environment, providing creative and positive solutions to embedding the curriculum in the animal unit.
Lead on the inclusion of practical skills in curriculum schemes of work, using
T industry expertise to embed best practice in all theory and practical sessions.
Actively identify sources of self-development and opportunities for individual continued professional development (including industry updating), to keep up to

date with developments within the sector. Developing links with local relevant industries and promoting the college.
Undertake any other similar duties of this level as required by Animal Centre

Manager and/or Head of Department.
