Job Title: Application, Performance and Simulation Engineer

Salary: £45,350 + Dependent Upon Experience

Location: Peterborough, Cambridgeshire

About IPSD

Caterpillar’s Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) designs, tests and manufactures 0.5 to 18L Cat® and Perkins engines that power over 5000 applications including Marine, Petroleum, Industrial Applications, Electric Generators, and Locomotives. Job Summary

As part of the Service & Customer Support group within ISPD, the Global Applications Support team are responsible for providing electronic, electrical and control systems integration support to our regional A&I teams, 3rd party OEM’s, CAT dealers and Perkins distributors. This support extends across multiple sectors including Industrial, Agriculture and EP for both CAT and Perkins brand 0.5 to 18 litre engine platforms.

We have an engineer level opportunity within the EAME team to focus on this electrical and electronic integration. The team works closely with customers and IPSD product groups and engineering teams to define, develop and apply advanced technologies for the control (Application Layer Software) of our engines and high voltage alternative power products in customer machine installations. 

Additional Info

  • Hybrid work pattern – office 3 days per week, travel exception apply

  • Mostly EAME travel 25-50% of the time but could be global at times

What You Will Do

  • Collaborate with customers and leadership to scope and execute projects that meet the needs of the business

  • Keep up to date on new technologies and drive continuous improvement to established techniques

  • Propose the best integration solutions to customers to ensure Perkins/Caterpillar is selected as primary engine supplier to meet the customers project goals for quality, time and cost.

  • Deliver timely, high-quality test or simulation data and analysis for customer applications, impacting products/processes and providing clear recommendations to stakeholders.

  • Approve electrical and electronic integration design for customer machines for production, by judging approval risk and balancing high installation standards with customers experience and machine requirements.

What You Have – Level Working knowledge

Technical Excellence

  • Educated to degree level in mechanical, electronic, electrical or control systems engineering; however, consideration will be given to other qualifications or significant job-related experience in lieu of this.

  • Completion of verification testing of software features 

  • Fault finding on Electronic systems, down to a component (eg: sensor) level 

  • Experience of integration aspects of a system for both fault finding and for Electronic system design ie: down to PWM, analogue and communications signals and experience of how to integrate the Electronic components together 

Customer Focus

  • Knowledge of the values and practices that align customer needs and satisfaction as primary considerations in all business decisions and ability to leverage that information in creating customized customer solutions.

  • Experience working with OEM customers in the off-highway machine or automative sectors, with knowledge of their integration requirements. 

Relationship Management

  • Knowledge of relationship management techniques; ability to establish and maintain healthy working relationships with clients, vendors, and peers.

  • Experience working at customer sites performing electrical and/or mechanical testing 

  • Able to leverage existing relationships with customers to drive solutions 

Process Management

  • Knowledge of business process improvement tools and techniques; ability to understand, monitor, update, control, or enhance existing business or work processes.

  • Actively collecting and developing detailed Electronic related customer requirements 

  • Documenting Electronic technical specifications 

  • Defining Electronic features and coordinating the development of them. 

Accuracy and Attention to Detail

  • Understanding the necessity and value of accuracy; ability to complete tasks with high levels of precision.  

Problem Solving:

  • Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems; ability to apply knowledge of problem solving appropriately to diverse situations.  

Effective Communications

  • Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.

  • Makes oral presentations and writes reports needed for own work.
