B&NES Chartered Town Planner Apprenticeship (entry point 2)

Are you a recent graduate with a good degree?

Are you fascinated by where and how people live?

Do you want to start your career in town planning in a world-renowned area?

This could be your chance!!

We are looking for a bright, hard-working graduate to join the Bath and North East Somerset planning team as a Chartered Town Planning Apprentice. As an apprentice you will work towards an RTPI accredited Masters degree, at the University of the West of England 1 day a week for 2 years followed by 1 year of Gateway and Endpoint Assessment leading to MRTPI status.

YOU ARE NOT ELIGIBLE TO APPLY IF YOU ALREADY HAVE A MASTERS DEGREE IN TOWN PLANNING OR RELATED SUBJECT AS YOU WILL NOT BE FUNDED

You will receive comprehensive training whilst working on rotation in each of the teams in the B&NES Planning Service:

  • Technical Support
  • Planning Policy
  • Development Management (deciding applications) including conservation & heritage
  • Planning Enforcement

This will give you a great understanding of various roles in a Local Planning Authority, how the teams work together and how the planning team works with other services across the council as well as members of the public.

You will be motivated to improve and develop the places where people live, work and play and you will want to help shape the future for Keynsham, Radstock, the surrounding areas as well as the City of Bath. You will be very IT literate, organised and a strong team player with good interpersonal and communication skills and an attention to detail. You will be enthusiastic about your own learning and development and committed to your studies.

What we ask of you is that you bring your passion for all things planning! Do your research. Prior to applying it would be worth reading our Local Plan, understand how the decision-making process works and how enforcement action happens. We would like you to be able to articulate the importance of the role of town planning on the built and natural environment as well as explain how you will contribute to this and what makes you suitable for our apprenticeship.

Bath and North East Somerset is a diverse area containing not only the internationally renowned City of Bath World Heritage Site, but also an extensive area of Green Belt, two AONBs and beautiful countryside and settlements, making the district a highly attractive place to work, live and visit. We are also a high performing and ambitious Planning service and are proud to have recently won an RTPI Planning Excellence award.

If you are forward thinking, ambitious, and keen to make a real difference in a world class environment and would like to join our team, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Your main place of work will be the award-winning, modern Civic Centre in Keynsham, halfway between Bath and Bristol, easily accessible via car or public transport, with a train station 5 minutes’ walk away.
