Job description
INTERNAL VACANCY ONLY
Do you have good customer service skills? Can you provide a friendly and welcome presence to our users, guiding them to the right information sources?
About us
This is an exciting time for SMG’s Archives and Libraries with our new strategy setting out how our collections will be the best in the world in our fields: well-understood, well-housed and accessible (physically and digitally) and used effectively by us and others for research, display, learning and pleasure.
At the National Railway Museum in York, the library and archive, known as Search Engine, is the home of a wealth of material connected with railways and transport industries, from the eighteenth century to the present day.
We are now seeking an Archive and Library Assistant to work in Search Engine for 7 hours per week, working either Tuesdays or Wednesdays on a rota basis.
About the role
The Archive and Library Assistant will provide a warm welcome to our users and will assist them to access our collections, whether that is families wanting to use children’s books in our inviting library space, a colleague researching an exhibition or a PhD student wanting to use our archives.
Download the Vacancy Information Pack file under ‘Attachments’ on this vacancy listing on the Science Museum Group website for more details about the role and the application process.
About you
You will bring excellent customer service skills with an enthusiasm for working with railway collections. You will be comfortable speaking to a range of people, demonstrating active listening skills and able to prioritise effective and remain courteous under pressure. You will have good ICT and organisational skills, as well as good attention to detail.
Don’t feel you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn’t match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
What we offer
Joining us as an employee, you will have the opportunity to develop your career in a world-class museum group. We understand that work/life balance and wellbeing is crucial to our colleagues, so we offer the perks listed below, as well as support for things that happen in life such as parental and adoption leave, sickness, and career breaks.
- Support with personal and professional development
- 27 days annual leave in addition to bank holidays
- Employee assistance programme
- Enhanced contributory pension
- Unmind App and other wellbeing support
- Interest-free loans
- Days Out discounts
