We have two vacancies for Senior Educational Psychologists to join the Defence Children Services organisation based in Wiltshire. You will play a vital role in supporting and improving the educational outcomes of children and young people in Service Families. These are dynamic and exciting roles providing the opportunity to travel to our overseas locations and work with the wider Defence community.
Who are we?
Defence Children Services (DCS) has staff working in Military establishments across the world. Our services include the provision of advice, guidance and support concerning the education and safeguarding for service families in the United Kingdom and across the world. This includes operating MOD schools and settings for the children of Defence personnel (Service and Civilian) serving overseas.
All our activities are crafted to meet the effective education needs of our children and families, mitigating the challenges of mobility and promoting the positive opportunities of service life. Your contribution to this is essential and invaluable.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Job description
As a Senior Educational Psychologist, you will make a huge difference to Defence by assessing, prior to posting, whether children's educational needs can be met in an overseas environment, and in responding to emerging needs of children already overseas.

Person specification
A Senior Educational Psychologist will:
- Provide a high quality and specialised applied educational psychology service to MOD Schools, MOD 0-3 years settings and DCS, using specialist child development models, systems, assessments and research skills.
- Provide specialist psychological assessment / consultation / intervention as well as offering consultation and recommendations on psychological care for pupils and young people as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Apply psychology to promote mental health, social and emotional well-being for children and young people and provide supervision and support to the children’s workforce.
- Develop and maintain effective links with key partners and respond to the changing demands of education in a military community.
- Contribute to the development and dissemination of good practice through the application of psychological knowledge and techniques.
- Undertake casework as needed for people within assigned part of the community to ensure that children, families and adults, and those services and agencies supporting them receive appropriate information, advice and assistance.
To be successful you should be able to demonstrate the following experience;
- Specialist knowledge/experience/interest in a particular area of professional work (e.g. early years, behaviour support, social communication and language difficulties, Mental health/emotional wellbeing).
- Experience of leading projects as an Educational Psychologist in a Local Authority or similar organisation.
- Previous successful experience in the support of children, families, and teams at times of critical incidents, including bereavement support.
- Ability to work independently within service frameworks.

You will be placed into the Teachers’ Pensions Scheme or Civil Service Pension arrangement (ALPHA) where appropriate. If it is determined that you enter the Civil Service Pension arrangement (ALPHA), the Soulbury salary range associated with the post will be abated by 4% to account for the difference in pension contributions.

Candidates invited to an interview will be required to deliver a presentation during the interview. The subject matter will be provided once invitations to interview are issued.
Interviews will take place at Upavon. A minimum of 2 full working days’ notice will be provided for interviews.
As a result of the changes to the UK immigration rules which came into effect on 1 January 2021, the Ministry of Defence will only offer sponsorship for a skilled worker visa under the points-based system, where a role has been deemed to be business critical.
