Art Editor, Nature Research

Springer Nature is looking for a creative, enthusiastic and self-motivated Art Editor to work on the world-leading Nature Research portfolio of journals. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a talented group of Art Editors, working with authors and editors to create scientific illustrations and figures, and to design monthly issue covers.
The ideal candidate will have a degree in illustration, or equivalent experience, as well as being organized, efficient, calm under pressure, able to prioritize their workload and to meet deadlines. They will have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and have a keen eye for detail.
Core accountabilities for the role include:
Creation of scientific/medical artwork from sketch or concept
Styling author-supplied artwork in line with Nature Research Guidelines
Accurately incorporating figure corrections for non-research content
Supporting the vendor to assess the quality and secure resupplies of author-submitted artwork
Quality control of vendor-processed artwork
Purchasing images and subsequent image rights tracking
Performing image integrity checks on research content and reporting on findings
Working with author/editor supplied images and concepts to design covers and hero images in line with Research Journal style
Liaising with editorial staff to ensure artwork/cover deadlines are met
Contributing to a library of re-usable image elements
Experience, skills and qualification requirements:
Essential
Technical proficiency in relevant art and design software, such as Photoshop and Illustrator
Artistic and creative flair
Excellent attention to detail
Planning and organisational skills
Effective collaboration and communication skills
Ability to manage projects to deadlines
Ability to work individually and as part of a team
Problem solving skills
Flexibility and adaptability
Broad interest in production and publishing
Degree in illustration or equivalent experience
Desirable
A background or an interest in science
Ability to use desktop publishing software such as InDesign to layout pages
Familiarity with animation design software
Print and/or online publishing experience.
