Job description

Northumberland National Park Authority is dedicated to preserving the natural beauty, wildlife, and cultural heritage of Northumberland National Park. As the least populated and most tranquil of England's national parks, it offers an exceptional working environment for those passionate about ecology and conservation.

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Assistant Ecologist to join our  team. The successful candidate will assist in the delivery of ecological surveys, monitoring programs, and conservation projects. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the management and enhancement of the park's diverse habitats and species.

3 days per week, based in Hexham. Fixed term contract to Feb 2026

Job purpose

Work alongside the NNPA Ecologist to support the following work areas;

  • Natural Environment Vision monitoring and recording.
  • Habitats and species monitoring, for instance wading birds and traditional hay meadows surveys.
  • Farming in Protected Landscapes consultations.
  • Tree planting advice and consultations.
  • Engagement opportunities, for instance talks and events.
  • Ecological support for the Hadrian’s Wall Wetlands Landscape Recovery pilot and other National Parks sites such as Walltown and our woodlands.
  • Ecological support to the NNPA Farming Team to help ensure effective agri-environment schemes.

You will need:

  • Relevant ecology degree, equivalent qualification or experience.
  • Broad based knowledge of biodiversity, farming and land management issues.
  • Specialist knowledge of upland habitats and species.
  • Ecological survey experience, identification skills, and the ability to produce clear, concise survey reports.
  • Good interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Confident in the use of GIS.
  • Confident in the use of information technology systems, the use of all Microsoft Office 365 applications and MS Teams.
  • Experience in ecology and conservation.
  • Experience of advising and supporting others in particular colleagues, forums and land managers, in the delivery of biodiversity.
