We are currently looking for talented and motivated Assistant Engineer to join our busy Civil Structures team in Edinburgh.  This role can be worked flexibly with a minimum of 3 days per week in the office and the option of adjusted start and finish times.

What does the role involve?     

At Sweco, we draw upon a combined knowledge base of 22,000 experts across Northern Europe. Working as part of the Scotland Civil Structures teamon bridges and other highways structures, you will act as an Assistant Engineer to undertake and check the delivery of design solutions and associated outputs and coordinate with other disciplines. 

You will be involved in projects from conception to completion including; supporting the Project Manager to clarify the project brief, agree deliverables, key milestones, project methodology, quality assurance and control strategy; establishing project checking and approval arrangements and managing internal project start-up meetings; undertaking elements of the detailed design and the checking of outputs as directed: e.g. calculations, drawings, sketches, reports etc to achieve the optimum solution for the project; assessing, documenting and communicating design changes to the Project Manager.

You will take ownership and responsibility for the quality of work you produce, ensuring that work is delivered in line with the agreed timescales and ensuring you understand and comply with our Company Integrated Management system and all relevant health and safety legislation.

To be successful in this role you’ll have:

  • A Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural engineering.
  • Some relevant post qualification structures design experience and project delivery in structures design including bridges and/or other highway structures.
  • Experience in structural modelling software such as STRAP, Autodesk Bridge Design, Lusas or similar structural packages
  • Experience of designing to Eurocodes using different materials including Reinforced Concrete and Steel etc.
  • Working knowledge of MS Excel, Word and AutoCAD.
  • Ability to communicated in a fluent and positive manner with other team members and to produce reports in clear English.
  • Some experience of providing project governance on projects.
  • Strong analytic and problem-solving skills and are passionate to find a quick, innovative and practical solution.
  • The ability to work collaboratively to form strong positive working relationships with colleagues and clients and enjoy working in a team environment, sharing knowledge and demonstrate pride in work.
  • The ability to organise and prioritise your workload to ensure that project timescales are met.
