Job description

Summary
We are the public body that looks after England`s historic environment. We champion historic places, helping people understand, value and care for them.
Historic England are seeking an Assistant Listing Adviser to join our team and produce specialist advice and recommendations to Government on whether to include a building or site on the National Heritage List for England (NHLE).
What you will be doing
To produce specialist advice and recommendations to Government on whether to include a historic building, archaeological site or designed landscape on the National Heritage List for England (NHLE). This includes advice on the listing of buildings, scheduling of monuments and registering of parks, gardens and battlefields.
You will assess applications made for historic buildings or archaeological sites or designed landscapes to be included on the National Heritage List for England (NHLE) and provide timely and accurate advice to Government by:
a. Reviewing information provided in an application and carrying out any initial research and an initial assessment to determine whether the building or site merits further investigation. If it does not warrant further investigation, producing a well-written Reject at Initial Assessment Report.
b. If the application merits further investigation, carrying out a full assessment, including a necessary level of information gathering and research. This stage will usually involve a site visit and the production of a Consultation Report incorporating a history and description of the building or site.
c. To undertake consultation as part of the designation process with key stakeholders, including local authorities, Historic Environment Records, amenity societies, owners and applicants.
d. Based on all the information gathered and the consultation representations made, produce a final Advice Report incorporating a rigorous, robust and well-written assessment outlining whether to recommend the building or site be added to the NHLE.
You will carry out a range of assessments on responsive casework, following applications from members of the public, Enhanced Advisory Services (EAS) cases and strategic projects to agreed targets and deadlines.
This role will flag contentious or controversial cases as early as possible to the Team Leader and Senior members of staff, ensuring risks are identified and mitigated and external interest and perceptions taken into account. You will develop expertise in particular areas of specialist knowledge and commit to ongoing training and professional development, whilst working with other regional and central teams to ensure the alignment of Listing activity with agreed corporate and regional priorities and underpinning research as appropriate.
You will work with partners and stakeholders to deliver strategic and thematic listing programmes, being a champion of the principles of listing, and current listing policy, and communicate them to outside bodies and the public.
Who we are looking for:
Good degree in a relevant subject (or equivalent experience).
Experience of working in the heritage/ historic environment sector.
An ability to recognise, analyse and assess the significance of components of the historic environment.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
The ability to consistently meet tight deadlines.
An understanding of the current process and the current systems of listing, scheduling and registration.
Please note that:
The role requires regular travel to sites not serviced by public transport.
The role requires visiting/inspecting sites which may be difficult to access.
