Overview and Responsibilities

Assistant Psychologist – Hedgeway

Location: Pilning, Bristol, BS35 4JN 

Salary:  £22,835.30 - £26,301.70 (FTE £26,582.40 - £30,617.60)

Hours: 40 hours per week –Term time only

Aurora Hedgeway is a dynamic and inspiring provision for 7-19 year olds with complex communication and associated difficulties.  

Putting students’ needs first, because they know that once they understand the young people’s personal needs and individual learning styles they can provide the right level of support to enable them to learn more effectively and achieve their full potential. Working with students to prepare them for adulthood, whether that be further education, training or employment. 

The main purpose of the role:

The purpose of the Assistant Psychologist is to provide a Clinical Psychologist Assessment and Intervention Service for Aurora Hedgeway School.

Key duties:

  • Sending out Microsoft Forms to parents/sitting with young people supporting them to complete standardised questionnaires. Scoring questionnaire responses accurately and summarising the information.
  • Carrying out cognitive assessments (using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale) and other standardised assessments as appropriate with young people who may find it difficult to engage/attend to an assessment process.
  • Drawing out key information from young peoples’ background history and documents /reports relating to a child.
  • Assisting staff to write clear risk assessments. Assisting the team around the child to understand a young person’s behaviour (using a PBS framework). 
  • Closely observing young people, their behaviour and their interactions with others within the classroom and within less structured environments. Writing clear and very detailed notes on your observations.
  • Ensuring that your notes are well organised and storage ensures data protection
  • Carrying out ‘skills’ teaching sessions with children based using a Positive Behavioural Support framework.

Skills and Qualifications

Successful candidate qualities:

Essential

  • Psychology Degree
  • An understanding of Autistic Spectrum Conditions
  • Organised and able to take instruction
  • Experience of using excel and Microsoft 365 including SharePoint.

Desirable

  • Further academic studies / experience in the field of Psychology
  • Experience of running small groups for young people using Evidence Based Interventions
