Job description

With a love for the great outdoors, you’ll enjoy working with nature and want to inspire and motivate others. You’ll help to make habitats for wildlife better and make everyone feel welcome at our places.

This is a great opportunity to develop skills and contribute to the important work we’re doing. As part of the Ranger team, you’ll need to think about our impact on the environment and how you can help.

Weekend and bank holiday working will be required. A full driving licence is essential for this role as there is an element of lone working where you'll need to use estate vehicles.

What it's like to work here:Based at Dudmaston, you’ll report to the Area Ranger. The wider Ranger team includes another Assistant Ranger plus volunteers.

Enchanted wooded parkland, sweeping gardens and a house with a surprise, Dudmaston is something unexpected in the Shropshire countryside. A much loved home for over 875 years. The gardens provide amazing vistas and tranquillity while the orchard is the perfect place to relax and for the children to let off steam. For more stunning views and getting up close to nature head to Big Pool and Dingle woods, while the wider estate provides extensive walking routes for year round enjoyment.

Because Dudmaston is in a rural area, please think about how you’d be able to get here for work, before you apply for this job.

What you'll be doing:As Assistant Ranger, you’ll undertake different tasks in countryside management. This will include nature conservation working to make habitats better for wildlife, site inspections, routine practical maintenance, monitoring of wildlife habitats, supporting volunteers, and helping to deliver activities that strengthen people’s connections with the outdoors.

As no two days are the same, the nature of the role means a flexible approach is crucial to ensure the right level of support is given across the site. So, whether you’re maintaining our green spaces or talking to people, you’ll inspire others to love our beautiful places as much as you do.

An exciting time to join the team at Dudmaston and Kinver Edge where we are aiming to deliver at scale on Nature recovery and access improvements across the wider estate. We want to restore flood plain meadows, lowland heathland and wood pasture and improve our water and soil quality. We'll be using grazing animals to achieve this as well as fostering partnerships with our tenants.

Who we're looking forWe’d love to hear from you if you're:
  • able to demonstrate practical experience in land, conservation and access management to level 2 or have 6 months vocational experience
  • willing to work outside in all weathers and deliver tasks when the weather conditions aren’t ideal
  • comfortable working in a flexible and adaptable way
  • able to work alone or under direction, and as part of a team
  • positive with an approachable attitude
  • happy and willing to learn new things
  • enjoy the work you do and happy to share this with others

The packageThe National Trust has the motto ‘For everyone, for ever’ at its heart. We’re working hard to create an inclusive culture, where everyone feels they belong. We welcome and value difference, so when we say we’re for everyone, we want everyone to be welcome in our teams too.
