Job description

Assistant Ranger - Helston
Summary

We are recruiting an Assistant Ranger to assist in the practical delivery of our grant funded Species Recovery Project here on the Lizard in Cornwall. This role will be key to the delivery of this significant nature conservation project and will run until the project end date (31st March 2025). You will work alongside the project's existing Assistant Ranger delivering practical habitat creation and restoration activities that will aid the fortunes of some of the UK's rarest species.

What it's like to work here

The Lizard peninsula forms the southern-most point of mainland Britain and has long been renowned for its rare wildlife, unique geology and its landscape dominated by exposed heathlands and relatively wild coastal scenery. You'll be part of a Countryside based team and will work alongside other ranger and project-based staff (8 in total), as well as a large number of volunteers. You will be line managed by the Species Recovery Project Officer.

What you'll be doing

As an Assistant Ranger, you'll undertake different tasks in countryside management. This will include nature conservation tasks that will make habitats better for wildlife, site inspections, routine practical maintenance of countryside furniture, monitoring of wildlife habitats, and supporting and supervising volunteers. You'll also help deliver activities that strengthen people’s connections with the outdoors.

You'll be able to work independently and plan your time effectively, as well as work alongside existing staff and volunteers. You’ll be responsible for adhering to National Trust Health & Safety polices and take a role in the maintenance of the machinery you use. You'll regularly use brushcutters and chainsaws, for which training can be given if not already achieved, and there may be an opportunity to use tractor and flail depending on experience. You'll gain extensive experience in habitat management practices, including controlled burning of heathland and conservation grazing with ponies.

The nature of the role means a flexible approach is crucial, as well as optimism and a can-do attitude in the face of a repetitive physical task on a rainy day on the cliffs!

You'll have a full clean driving licence.
