Assistant Sports Teacher

1. Purpose of the job
  • Provide support for staff and children, especially with curriculum sport, during term-time.
  • To assist in the running of the Sports Centre.

2. Relationships (including accountability)
  • The post holder is accountable to the Deputy Head (Extra-Curricular & Sport).
  • The post holder works closely with team members in the Sports Centre.
  • Establish professional working relationships with colleagues across the School.
  • To be sensitive to the co-educational needs of the pupils.
  • Able to encourage good relationships and co-operation with pupils, parents and visitors.
  • Participate in arrangements for professional development, including working with your assigned
Staff Development Leader and Staff Buddy who respectively offer oversight for your
performance and professional development.


3. Duties and Responsibilities


Sport:

  • To coach sport (especially major team sports and swimming) to children in lessons and at team
practices.
  • To take responsibility for a team on match days/officiate, as required.
  • To prepare and maintain equipment e.g. store cupboards, inflate balls, pre-lesson set-up.
  • To prepare for fixtures, including flags, boundary markers and pitch inspection.
  • To assist with sport administration e.g. recording of sports data on computer, report-writing.

Camp Hawthorns: (during School holiday periods)
  • To organise and coordinate Activity Assistants.
  • To ensure the safety of all staff and children.
  • To ensure general cleaning of activity areas, including Pavilion.
  • To set up and take down equipment at the beginning and end of the sessions.
  • To offer support and implement new ideas and activities.
  • Attend training as and when required.
  • Carry out any other duties required as directed by the Children’s Activity Manger.
  • Provide full supervision of the children during the activity courses.
  • To be responsible for daily safety checks as directed by the Children’s Activity Manager.
  • To be responsible for the general care and tidiness of all equipment.
  • To lead activity sessions.


Sports Centre:

  • To hold/take National Pool Lifeguard Qualification, and act as lifeguard as and when required.
  • To assist the Swim Scheme Manager with the administration and running of the Swim Scheme
  • To form part of the duty management team, including early morning, evening and weekend
working on a rota basis.
  • To ensure that a high level of customer service is maintained at all times.
  • To assist the Sports Centre Management team in:
o marketing, implementation and administration of all external-user activities;
o checking of the Centre’s Health & Safety standards; and
o maintenance and daily cleaning of designated areas, to include regular water testing,

recording and taking any necessary remedial action.

  • To act on behalf of the Sports Centre Manager in his absence.
  • To assist with supervisory duties on a day to day basis.
  • To provide swimming lesson cover as agreed (paid extra on a timesheet).

General:

  • Assisting with other supervision and covering for absent colleagues when required.
  • Maintaining good order and discipline among pupils and safeguarding their health and safety.
  • To be familiar with and work within the required Health and Safety standards as laid out in the
School’s policy.
  • Hours as agreed which may include evening and weekend work (on a rota basis).
  • To ensure punctuality and example in attitude, manners and dress at all times.
  • To support and uphold the School’s policies.

4. Safeguarding Children
The post holder’s responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young
persons, for whom s/he is responsible, or with whom s/he comes into contact, will be to adhere to and
ensure compliance with the School’s Child Protection Policy Statement at all times. If in the course of
carrying out their duties, the post holder becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or
welfare of children in the school s/he must report any concerns to one of the School’s Designated
Safeguarding Leads or to the Headmaster.
