Assistant Water Network Technician Apprenticeship

Our Apprentice Assistant Water Network Technician Programme offers the perfect blend of personal and professional development, exposing you to the core of our business. Entering an apprenticeship scheme with us involves working towards the role of a fully-fledged professional, earning a salary, whilst also being able to maintain a sense of academic achievement. At Severn Trent we provide the perfect mix between hands-on experience and a formal qualification, enabling our apprentices to make a real lasting difference to our customers and communities, not just for now, but far into the future.

Water Network Technicians work outside across our region to find leaks on our huge network of underground pipes and get these repaired. You will be supported every step of the way, by your line manager and mentor. Working in our Water Network team, you’ll will be ensuring we identify and reduce water leakage across our network. In your daily work, you’ll interact with distribution service technicians and our repair and maintenance technicians. You will also work with our call centres, network optimisation and contractors. You’ll regularly engage with customers and members of the public which will help you to build your stakeholder relationship management skills.

Entry Criteria

This apprenticeship standard is at Level 3 (equivalent to 2 A-Level qualifications). If you don't already have GCSEs in English and maths, you will need to take functional skills as part of the apprenticeship, which is an alternative to GCSEs and achieve a Level 2. This will need to be achieved prior to completion of your apprenticeship.

Health & Safety: We take the health and safety of our employees very seriously. This role will require you to listen for leaking pipes, therefore you will be asked in your application if you have any health restrictions which could impact your ability to hear

Travel/License Requirements

  • You will be required to have a Driving Licence & access to you own vehicle before completing your apprenticeship as driving is mandatory for your off-scheme role

Role Expectations Post Apprenticeship

Following successful completion of your apprenticeship, you will take up an Assistant Water Network Technician role, where you will be able to put your skills into action.

  • Expected 40-hour weeks.
  • Night-time working to investigate leakage when required.
  • You’ll be part of a standby rota.
  • Working independently.

What you will Learn

  • You will learn how to identify leakage, using data, tools and techniques.
  • Give advice to customers on water fittings and repair and maintain meters and loggers.
  • You will also learn how to identify Water Network issues, apply fault-finding and problem-solving techniques, and identify root causes in some of our equipment to resolve faults.
  • We will teach you how to calibrate equipment such as temporary loggers and pressure gauges to the appropriate standard.
  • You will learn how to operate our Water Network safely and protect our environment.

As if that isn’t enough, you’ll receive an annual salary increase whilst you’re on programme and you’ll also get an increase when you move into your first job. 

You’ll be supported every step of the way, by your line manager and mentor. Working alongside our technical operations team, you’ll work with clean water and apply treatment processes to make it wholesome for the customers we serve every day. You will play a large part in controlling the supply of water to meet the daily demand meaning you will engage with internal and external customers for example: contractors, regulators, colleagues, and our communities. Furthermore, you’ll fault find on treatment processes and assets, receive and store chemical deliveries, assess and optimise energy on site and carry out site checks for safety, security, and productivity purposes, reporting any faults, issues and concerns that need escalation.
