The Workshop and Engineering section has recently undergone a significant reshaping and we are now looking to recruit to a number of key roles across the team to secure long term success. The successful applicant will support the established Workshop and Engineering Manager to deliver on purchase and maintenance activities of the Green Spaces fleet. This will ensure the council’s statutory duties are upheld and we are able to provide safe, well-maintained spaces for all to enjoy. About you

As the Assistant Workshop and Engineering Manager, you will bring to the role:

  • The ability to oversee the Workshop and Engineering function ensuring that vehicles, plant and equipment are maintained in line with manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Ability to ensure compliance with legislation relating to licences and certification for vehicle and operator functions.
  • Ability to undertake procurement activity for plant and transport related equipment.
  • Ensure that the services’ transport and fleet continue to meet required standards.
  • To assist and undertake a key supporting role for the Workshop and Engineering Manager when appropriate.      

About the role 

Our Transport and Engineering section are seeking to appoint an Assistant Workshop and Engineering Manager, to be part of a team based at The Arium but may also be asked to work anywhere within the city boundary.

The successful candidate will be a highly flexible, well-motivated self-starter who possesses excellent communication skills and a commitment to providing the highest level of service. You must have a proven ability to work to tight deadlines and prioritise your work and keep accurate records.

You will be required to supervise the operation of the Workshop and Engineering section ensuring that vehicles, plant and equipment are maintained in line with manufacturers recommendations. 

Manage the acquisition, issue, and receipt of Agricultural, Horticultural, Arboriculture and specialist plant, machinery and vehicle parts, tools and equipment as required, while ensuring compliance with procurement procedures. 

Ensure that the Greenspaces fleet in operated in compliance with legislation relating to licences and certification for vehicle and operator functions.

Job Description

Job Purpose: To coordinate the day to day service delivery of the Workshop and Engineering function in support of the service.

Responsibilities: 

  • To oversee the Workshop and Engineering function ensuring that vehicles, plant and equipment are maintained in line with manufacturer’s recommendations
  • To assist and undertake a key supporting role for the Workshop and Engineering Manager when appropriate 
  • To undertake procurement activity for plant and transport related equipment
  • To ensure compliance with legislation relating to licences and certification for vehicle and operator functions
  • To ensure that the services’ transport and fleet continues to meet required standards
  • To manage and motivate staff within the Workshop and Engineering team including ensuring that appropriate staff development is in place
  • To manage budgets as delegated
  • To ensure effective consultation mechanisms to develop the work of the service
  • To compile and provide performance information that is accurate and timely when requested
  • To fulfil duties in support of the Parks and Greenspace Strategy for Leeds
  • Flexible and adaptable to change to assist other services as required commensurate to grade  
  • Participate in appraisal, training, and development activities as necessary to ensure up to date knowledge and skills
  • Improve own practice through observation, evaluation, discussion with colleagues and appropriate CPD programmes.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, knowing when to seek help and advice.
  • Contribute to the overall ethos, work, and aims of the service by attending relevant meetings, training days/events as requested.
  • Be aware of and comply with Leeds City Council policies and procedures e.g., child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality, and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person

Experience Required

  • Liaising with external and internal clients and partners
    Preparation and presentation of information at diverse levels for example to senior managers and elected members
  • Managing information and report writing
  • Procurement of grounds maintenance machinery and plant
  • Implementation and operation of management systems
  • In managing projects or work programmes
  • In fleet, transport, and plant management
