Job description

Job Description

Do you have experience of landscape planning and, more specifically, landscape and visual impact assessments (LVIA)? We are looking for someone to join our specialist team in Edinburgh or Manchester as part of our award-winning design and landscape planning practice.

About us

Optimised Environments (OPEN) is a design and landscape planning practice, of around 75 people, with offices in Edinburgh, Manchester and London and a strong track record for staff retention. OPEN has recently become part of the SLR Group with offices located around the world. SLR is a global leader in environmental and advisory solutions helping clients achieve their sustainability goals. The coming together of OPEN and SLR provides a host of opportunities for career development and potential for work across a wide range of sectors and countries. The SLR team has around 35 landscape professionals across the UK. We are willing to consider a variety of different working practices depending on your capability and location and can be flexible in this regard. Our salaries are competitive, and complemented by comprehensive benefits along with a structured career framework and open, transparent promotion process.

The role

We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic Landscape Architect or Landscape Planner to join the OPEN/SLR team as a Project Manager specialising in landscape and visual impact assessment (LVIA) and landscape planning project work. You could already be chartered or working towards chartership, for which we offer support and mentoring. The teams are involved in a diverse range of significant development and renewable energy projects throughout the UK and the Republic of Ireland. If you are successful, you will have the opportunity to further develop your skills and expertise, contributing to a wide range of exciting projects from mixed-use and urban re-development projects to Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects, onshore and offshore wind farms and strategic housing promotion and development. Our approach to landscape planning and assessment includes a strong emphasis on iterative analysis and design, to inform developments as part of mitigation by design strategies, so there are also opportunities for creative input into schemes through landscape planning inputs. Field work is also a key part of our LVIA work at OPEN/SLR and this may involve some travel in the UK and the Republic of Ireland.

About you

The focus of this position is primarily on LVIA related work, and we would consider applications from candidates with experience in this field for a Senior or Associate position with a project management role. We would also be interested in applications from Landscape Architects/ landscape planners with some experience and enthusiasm to develop a career in LVIA, for which we are able offer on the job training and mentoring by experienced staff should this be required. We are seeking an adept communicator skilled in crafting concise, well-worded reports, proficient in office/studio-based design/reporting as well as fieldwork. Eligibility to live and work in the UK with a valid full driving license is required.
