About the role

The UCL Centre for Languages & International Education (CLIE) is looking to appoint a number of well-qualified and experienced Associate Lecturersin English for Academic Purposes for our Standard Pre-sessional programme, either online or face-to-face. Our BALEAP-accredited Programme is well-organised, high quality and rewarding to teach on. Students taking these courses are UCL offer-holders preparing for postgraduate and undergraduate entry into a range of disciplines, and are typically very highly motivated.

Associate Lecturers provide up to 21 contact hours per week. Teaching is either completely face-to-face on campus or completely online, but please note that all tutorials and assessments are conducted online. Associate Lecturers deliver lessons that provide high-quality instruction and develop students’ academic language, skills and autonomy to the level required for their future degree programmes, enabling them to contribute effectively to their chosen academic community.

About the contract

The Standard Pre-sessional course is a 10-week contract from 24 June - 30 August2024. The contract includes a comprehensive five-day induction at UCL’s Bloomsbury campus, seven weeks of teaching, and an additional two weeks at the end of the course for the marking of assessments, writing reports and administrative tasks. You will be on an open-ended contract at UCL, meaning that you would not need to reapply in following years should you successfully pass the two-year probation period for all new teachers.

You must have the right to live and work in the UK.

Please note, those teaching on one of our online courses will be required to attend the induction onsite in London but are not required to be onsite for the remainder of the course. They must however be based in the UK for the duration of the course. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide any campus accommodation for these posts.

The salary for this position is UCL Grade 7 spine point 34 - £46,732 (inclusive of London allowance).

In addition to the salary, teachers will also receive pay for accrued leave at the end of the contract. Please note, leave cannot be taken during the Pre-sessional course unless in exceptional circumstances and with prior agreement. Any leave taken is deducted from the final accrued leave total.

About you

The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic teacher, with a proven track record of excellent teaching. You will have significant English Language Teaching (ELT) experience, and ideally have previous Pre-sessional / EAP experience. You should have a keen interest in and awareness of the needs of international students, as well as the demands of research and autonomous learning within the context of a UK university. You will be equipped to deal with teaching on an intensive course, having the ability to plan, prepare and mark effectively, and balance competing pressures. You should be able to work with minimal supervision, and be proficient in using digital devices and tools including Microsoft Teams, Word and PowerPoint.

A full job description and person specification can be accessed at the bottom of this page.

Please take particular note of the minimum qualifications for this post. You must hold a first degree in any field, and in addition:
