As a Signalling Design Manager/ Associate Director, leading our Eastern region signalling team based in Leeds. This role will require you to undertake the role of a Contractors Responsible Engineer (CRE), review, verify and/or lead the production of signalling design as part of a dedicated signalling design team, as well as provide guidance and leadership to staff within their and other teams.

With a comprehensive understanding of the technical and business aspects of the rail-signalling industry, the Signalling Designer Manager will lead the signalling design working in multi-disciplinary project teams. 

Providing strong technical support to the discipline in terms of production, verification and mentoring.

Support the Regional Rail Systems Lead and Professional Head of Signalling with additional duties as required such as, resource management, continuing professional development of their team, progress/programme reporting, tendering new works, production of guidance notes etc.

You will hold knowledge of signalling design and interlocking principles, Network Rail standards, components and fabrication methods as well as hands-on experience managing the production, checking and approval of feasibility, outline and/or detailed signalling principles design and calculations.

Engagement with other staff necessary to discharge these duties will be as follows:

  • Project and Quality Delivery: Project Director, Project Manager, Project Engineer
  • Staff Development: Professional Head of Discipline
  • Client Engagement: Project Director, Work Winning team, Project Manager
  • Resource Management: Project Manager, Project Directors, Professional Head of Discipline
  • Cross Business Line: Local or regional management, Professional Head of Discipline

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage all signalling activities undertaken by their team, in accordance with client and governance requirements for signalling and associated projects
  • Review and lead the delivery of signalling projects to deliver to defined timescales
  • Bid preparation to support/lead tendering of new works
  • Maintain knowledge of current practices, processes, standards and emerging technologies in relation to the signalling discipline
  • Familiarity with multiple interlocking types such as RRI, E10k, mechanical, SSI etc.
  • Lead the production of, review and approve for construction of signalling designs and documentation at a consistent and acceptable level of quality
  • Partake in lessons learned reviews and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement
  • Ensure that the technical and engineering management processes and procedures for the delivery of discipline outputs are followed
  • Participate in development of technical proposals
  • Ensure that all skills and technical competence supporting documentation is kept up to date for self and team, e.g. IRSE licence, IRSE log book, Authority to Work, Company CV, mandatory training etc.

Growth and Leadership

  • Undertake the leadership role of the regional signalling team
  • Work with the Professional Head of Discipline to develop a plan for growth for their regional team, feeding into the overall discipline plan
  • Ensure that a plan for Training and Development for their team is in place and monitored
  • Ensure that appropriate levels of mentorship and guidance are being provided
  • Be visible across all offices where staff in their team are located and provide an appropriate level of leadership
  • Be actively involved in the recruitment of staff by the identification of resource gaps and ensure that these gaps are filled with appropriately skilled and experienced staff
  • Assist the Professional Head of Discipline in developing a culture of technical excellence by driving a right first-time approach

Commitment to delivery to internal and external clients, with the view towards timeliness, reliability, safety and accuracy of completed tasks
