Job description

Join the Farndon Unit as an Associate Specialist where you will provide care for women with personality disorders and mental illness in an established and well-run service. You will focus on assessing, managing and supporting individuals both on their new to be established 6 bedded acute ward and our 9 bedded high dependency rehabilitation ward. The rest of the hospital site includes another 12 bedded acute ward and 20 low secure care beds, spread over 2 wards.


You will work alongside 3 Consultant Psychiatrists and a wider multidisciplinary team. You will have the opportunity to deliver person-centred care, treatment and support to some of the most vulnerable people in society.

You will be able to join a dynamic peer group with your Consultant colleagues within the region and will work with a Consultant supervisor. You will also be supported to join the SAS doctors peer group and a Psychiatrist Mentorship Scheme to support your individual and career development if you wish.

There is an out of hours on-call rota. This will be at a maximum frequency of 1:6 pro rata. There are long established Consultant on call arrangements in place to support this.


The Farndon Unit is located in Newark and is part of IMPACT Provider Collaborative in the region with close links to NHS services with established care pathways. We are rated good across all domains by the CQC and forge to maintain high standards. The Farndon Unit has excellent transport links and is commutable from Lincoln, Nottingham, Sleaford and Mansfield.

Your Responsibilities

  • Assessments and admissions of new patients to the service.
  • Obtaining collateral histories from other professionals and family.
  • Formulating a diagnosis in conjunction with the MDT.
  • Completing physical health assessments and working closely with our GP’s and Physical Health Nurse to improve the physical wellbeing of patients
  • Completing discharge letters/reports/ SOAD forms.
  • Support the adequate working of the Care Programme Approach and Care and treatment plans for service users.
  • Work closely with our Pharmacist to ensure safe, effective, evidence based prescribing.
  • Liaise with external professionals and work collaboratively with commissioners and external care teams to aid seamless transitions to the community.
  • Contributing to the service development by participating in Clinical Governance activities, quality initiatives, audits, research and teaching.
  • Under the supervision of the Consultant, provide leadership of the clinical team and preparing First-tier Tribunal and Hospital Managers' hearing reports.

As an Associate Specialist, you will have:

  • Full GMC Registration
  • Experience in working in psychiatry within multi-disciplinary teams
  • To be in good standing with the Royal College of Psychiatrists
  • To have had an Appraisal/RITA within the last year
  • At least 3 years’ experience in Psychiatry
  • Experience working as a doctor within a similar environment
