Job Purpose
Every child and young person should have the opportunity to thrive and be the best they can be. Many children experience issues and challenges - such as living in poverty, being disabled or ill, or experiencing distress, neglect or trauma - that affects their quality of life and overall wellbeing; therefore, at BBC Children in Need, we act where the need is greatest.
We aim to create positive and lasting change across the UK for the children and young people who need us most by investing in positive relationships that strengthen their wellbeing and help them navigate the challenges in their lives. We achieve this by supporting over 1,500 local charities and projects in communities across the UK and investing in targeted programmes - many in partnership with other funders and corporate partners.
The Audience Insight Manager reports to the Director of Insight, within the Insight function. The Insight function works across all areas of Children in Need in supporting the delivery of our charitable ambition through the generation of insight and knowledge to inform decision making.
The Audience Insight Manager plays a key role across the organisation, with a focus on strengthening our knowledge base in relation to our donors, fundraisers and audiences, and leveraging that insight and expertise in a way that helps us to grow our income over time.
Main Responsibilities

  • To provide insight across the organisation into our current and potential donors and fundraisers - their profiles, attitudes and behaviours - and apply that insight to inform strategy, activity and decision making and ultimately drive income growth.
  • To partner with stakeholder teams across Marketing, Fundraising, Partnerships and Content, to identify opportunities to add value through supporter and Audience Insight, translating those opportunities into research/analysis briefs and leveraging resultant insight to inform activity and decision making.
  • To project manage all research into our donors, fundraisers and audiences - scoping the brief and methodology, selecting and managing the agency partner through to debrief, and distilling the resultant learning into key insights to inform future activity.
  • To manage all research projects that feed our annual appeal evaluation, working with stakeholders to shape the brief for each project, partnering with research agencies to maximise the value from the investment, shaping the debrief and distilling the findings into key insights to inform future campaign development.
  • To integrate all sources of insight into the performance of our external campaigns (in particular our November Appeal season) from a Marketing, Fundraising and Content perspective, in order to provide a research based evaluation against objectives to inform future campaign development.
  • To ensure that all contextual learning around the charity and fundraising landscape is fully mined with implications for Children in Need drawn out and communicated in an engaging and actionable way.
  • To partner with the charity CRM Manager to maximise the value derived from our CRM data, translate business issues into analysis briefs, and identify solutions to data and analytical issues/opportunities.
  • To develop a strong working relationship with the BBC audience research team - encouraging two-way sharing of relevant insight, monitoring and reviewing all relevant research available to Children in Need through the BBC, ensuring that we fully understand our impact and standing with our viewing audience, and that we are aware of relevant audience trends and reviewing potential implications for our content and marketing strategy.
  • To consolidate our learning from Audience Insight over time in order to continuously build our expertise, and to become the voice of our audiences across the charity.
  • To be an active member of the Insight team, collaborating effectively with Insight colleagues on key functional workstreams and contributing to the overall establishment of insight based decision making across the organisation.

Knowledge, Skills, Training & Experience

  • Prior experience of audience/consumer research, gained either agency or client side, with knowledge of a range of core techniques, both qualitative and quantitative.
  • End to end project and agency management experience.
  • Strong quantitative analysis skills including working creatively with existing data sources/large data sets.
  • Skilled in using software for both quantitative analysis (eg Excel, SPSS) and qualitative analysis (eg NVIVO).
  • Adapts and works effectively with different situations, individuals or groups.
  • Creatively analyses data from a variety of sources and tell stories in an engaging way.
  • Strong team player, with the ability to work effectively with different situations, individuals or groups, internally and externally.
  • Inherently curious about how Insight can add value to the organisation, open to change and keen to seek out new ways of doing things.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to distil multiple sources of data/research into compelling insight that will drive action, and the ability to present sound and well-reasoned arguments to convince others.
  • Hands-on experience of conducting qualitative research and/or facilitating workshops is also desirable.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to prioritise efficiently and deliver to deadlines.
  • Proven ability to work on own initiative.
