MPI have a requirement for a Cable Feasibility & Development Engineer to work onsite in Deeside, Flintshire. This role is deemed in scope of IR35 Contract is to start asap until June 2024 Rate of pay £16.03 per hour PAYE JOB PURPOSE The role is required to develop, reverse engineer, manufacture, test and repair avionics, maritime, ground and weapons system cables, wiring harnesses and looms in a timely and efficient manner whilst complying with legislative and organisational standards. This is achieved by analysing engineering drawings, diagrams, organisational components and developing a manufacturing process. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE JOB Work in accordance with the Maintenance Approved Organisation Scheme (MAOS) ensuring that the correct authorisations are worked towards, held and kept current and comply with all statutory COSHH, H&S and environmental protection instructions. Completing all relevant paperwork and engineering documentation to provide an auditable record of work carried out. Responsible to reverse engineer, develop and fully document repair capabilities for cables by utilising and or creating Approved Source Documentation as required, and any supplementary component listings and spares required. Confer with engineering, customers and other departments to discuss existing or potential projects at initial contract/design phase. Work as part of a team to meet performance targets and objectives for assigned area. Work with the production teams and other business areas to foster a spirit of innovation and seek to constantly improve. Work with customers and key stakeholders to understand their requirements and ensure their expectations are being met. Utilise the Staff Reports, (APD) and Personal Development Plans to develop own capabilities, behavioural competences and work to the Clients core values. Input and update of data and the maintenance of digital media to satisfy internal and external customers with regard to airworthiness and information requirements. Over signing as second signatory on flight control, weapons and other critical systems. Maintain and update all hard copy ASI documentation as is required.. Ensure the quality and standard of the workshop is maintained in accordance with the Company Business System, (DBM) and ISO regulations by following the relevant Operations DBM leaflet. Maintain mandatory training compliance. Direct or assist in coordinating the manufacture or repair of cable projects including documentation, drawings, tooling & testing of the finished article. Compile data and report writing regarding customer projects. Assist in the preparation of technical drawings and inspection & verification of the drawings to ensure the compliance. Estimate labour, materials, manufacture and repair times Inspect completed cable projects to ensure compliance to design and customer specification. Advise on technical procedures, providing information to supervisors, team members and other departments (SME) Supervise and train other team members as required. Investigate & recommend alternative materials. Devise & recommend alternative improvement to design e.g. ruggedize. To advise and assist on test interface builds within Operations. Mentor other members of the team, share their knowledge, skills and/or experience. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS Understanding of the ability to develop prototypes Able to understand and interpret complex electrical and mechanical drawings and diagrams to produce cables. Able to use electrical/mechanical test equipment to confirm serviceability and to assist fault diagnosis. Operate specialised software and printers to design and produce bespoke cable labels. Experience with specialist software packages (WINTOTAL). Be proficient in hand skills for crimping, soldering, wire stripping, heat guns and cable winding machinery. Expert understanding of practical cable manufacture techniques i.e. cable looms and harness layout. Excellent working knowledge of terminations and connections and their application. Carry out all work in a proficient manner to ensure airworthiness and customer levels are maintained. Must have an experienced broad skill set in cable manufacture. Working knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Word ) PTT qualified & certified Aircraft armament authority Repair authority Manufacture authority Capris Laser Marking System INTELLECTUAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB Problem solving skills to Interpret and work from engineering drawings to manufacture and or repair cables. A large degree of autonomy to fulfil the task in a timely manner during cable production. Work and therefore decision making is carried out under a scheme of self-supervision or supervision by an equivalent grade technician and in certain cases an independent inspection by a third technician. Research information on connectors and cable specifications for manufacture and repair purposes. Justify the outlay of time, materials and build standard to ensure mitigation of risk to meet a Health and Safety limit or design specifications. Justify test procedures to Engineering governance, Health and Safety, Compliance and the customer. Creative thinking, developed through experience, to overcome technical issues. Experience on all matters regarding cable work. Investigate alternative materials while liaising with obsolescence and commercial. COMMUNICATION DEMANDS OF THE JOB Good communication skills with team members of differing technical ability is essential, the incumbent will be relied upon and sought out for guidance and assistance. Internal communication on a daily basis between team and support areas, usually through face to face, telephone or E-Mail. External communication with customers, Project Teams, end-users, Original Equipment Manufacturers. Demonstrating technical knowledge and skills to customers in the capacity of Subject Matter Expert (SME), when engaging with customer and suppliers. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Movement of heavy or cumbersome items. Cable reels tend to be heavy and awkward to handle and require frequent movement to measure out accurately the required lengths for the task. The majority of tasks require complicated high degree of manual dexterity. Many tasks require close intricate work using magnifying aids and illumination, especially when crimping connectors and terminations, this can often result in eyestrain. Virtually all tasks require the use of solder, solvents, epoxy resins and adhesives with the resultant use of PPE and fume extraction. The incumbent must be aware of the hazards associated with the chemicals in use and the relevant COSHH data sheets and be compliant in their use. It is necessary to be able to identify colour coded components and wiring. The incumbent cannot have a colour vision deficiency. Use of chemicals, test equipment, tools and Personal Protective Equipment Use of microscope while holding body posture and manipulating components. Several emotional demands are present, including: Responsible for over signing fellow technicians work. Accurate Decision making accurate decisions within a tight time frame. Responsibility for the airworthiness of the equipment being worked on and the aircraft or system that it is fitted to. The emotional demand of having to highlight deviation from procedures or practices at all levels of the business. WORK ENVIRONMENT There is usually a moderate level of background noise. Environment requires the use of protective clothing. The use of fume extraction facility is required when soldering. There is a requirement for extra lighting above a minimum Lux level as stipulated by the HSE as design, close working, microscope use and bench placement means working in own shadow. REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE NVQ Level 2 Performing Engineering Operations or equivalent experience or qualification NVQ Level 3 Aeronautical Engineering (Manufacturing Aircraft Wiring Looms) or relevant apprenticeship or accredited training or industry experience, ideally in a military cable development or manufacturing role. Competence for Electrical/Avionic Tradesperson Employed on Aircraft Armament Systems. MAOS Cat B stamp holder in both Cable Manufacture and Cable Repair/Modification
