Job description

We are currently recruiting for a Band 2 Laboratory Porter. The role of the Porter is to work in liaison with all laboratory managers and technical staff and perform duties as necessary to maintain the service within the Pathology Department.

Duties include:

  • The area of responsibility is the Dirty Utility Room, the Autoclave Room and Stores areas; ensuring that cleanliness and tidiness are maintained in the working environment at all times. This includes dealing with spillages.
  • To assist in general porter duties within Pathology, wearing the correct PPE, supplied uniform and toe protector shoes.
  • To collect and accept deliveries of all Pathology Laboratory Stores and distribution to the relevant laboratories as required.

Essential Skills and Experience:

Qualification & Knowledge

  • General level of education

Experience

  • Ability to carry out instructions
  • Take and pass on messages
  • Recognise the need for confidentiality and maintain patient confidentiality, respect and dignity

Personal Qualities

  • To be polite and respectful to all patients, visitors and fellow members of staff
  • Clean/tidy and maintain high personal hygiene at all times
  • Able to communicate effectively with staff at all levels
  • Tolerant

Physical Requirement

  • Able to transport and lift heavy loads using the correct manual handling techniques
  • Occupational Health Clearance

Desirable

  • NHS experience within a large department
  • Knowledge of the hospital is an advantage
  • Use own initiative and quick to learn.
  • Be able to show sensitivity when necessary.
  • Be flexible for shift patterns
  • Clean driving licence
