About the role:

We are looking for a keen and enthusiastic Carpenter to join our team at Lewisham Hospital. This job is for a Maintenance Carpenter who has a good general knowledge of commercial and domestic buildings. In your duties as a Maintenance Carpenter there will be statutory checks in line with Approved Code of Practice (Building Regulations, HBN & HTM). You will be expected to work on your own initiative as well as working within a team. You will need to possess knowledge of building structures and fabric as well as fire compartmentalisation and fire door maintenance including planned preventative maintenance (PPM). Applicants should be able to arrange their work, parts and materials and carry out tasks in a safe and tidy manner.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Undertake planned preventative maintenance, reactive maintenance and emergency works as demanded by a hospital of this type. Use all skills, experience and knowledge ensuring safe working methods to carry out maintenance tasks in the most cost-effective way for the Trust
  • Understand the workings of buildings, engineering services and systems in NHS/Trust premises. Ensuring that they are maintained to a high standard and that all plant and equipment are utilised in a safe and efficient manner
  • Carry out work in a timely manner as requested using the current works requisition system and ensuring that any associated information is recorded
  • Provide a maintenance service to all Trust buildings, off site properties and be able to work unsupervised
  • Maintain continuity of service there will be times when extra hours, altered work patterns, duties or location are required. This will include working as part of an out of hours on-call team
  • Work safely in accordance with the Health & Safety at Work Act, current guidance and to follow any other safety policies as issued by the Trust and be compassionate and mindful to our clients and be mindful of the need for safe use, security, storage of plant, equipment and tools
  • Drive between trust properties in a safe and timely manner adhering to trust policies

You'll have the following skills/experience:

  • NVQ3 / Equivalent or higher in Site Carpentry and Joinery
  • Full Driving licence desirable but not essential.
  • Experience of working within a maintenance environment
  • Health & Safety qualification in one of the following: Safe use of ladders, Safe use/work from mobile scaffold tower (Pasma), Coshh, Manual handling
  • Knowledge of planned preventative maintenance (PPM)
  • Experience working for associated trades, basic IT skills and good communication skills
  • Experience of fire door maintenance and fire compartmentalisation
  • Ability to deal with tense difficult and stressful situations in the ward environment
  • Ability to work in occupied areas safely and conduct oneself in a manner that preserves the dignity and respect due to patients

· Wood machine training, specialist training and knowledge in a particular field of hospital engineering, Current IPAF certification, Asbestos awareness training desirable but not essential

This role may require you to show evidence of vocational level 3 qualification or at least 2 years relevant experience.
