Job description

An opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Specimen Reception Manager for Blood Sciences at Barking, Havering, Redbridge University Hospital NHS Trust (BHRUT). We are looking for a self-motivated and results driven individual to manage the Blood Sciences Specimen Reception team to the provision of a high-quality service to the wider operational departments to meet service requirements across the hospital sites.
The successful candidate will lead service improvements projects, embed new service and working practices, bring together the teams and developing a positive culture reflective high performing team.
You will have the ability to collaborate with other teams including service users within and outside of the Trust and the management team to build strong working relationships that enhance patient care and service delivery. Acting as a role model you will encourage a culture of openness to encourage the staff you manage to develop and progress, providing them with support and motivation. The successful candidate for this role should possess excellent communication skills, team building skills, be customer focused, delivery skills and leadership qualities.
To manage the day-to-day management of Blood Sciences Specimen Reception and urgent bench on both hospital sites Queens Hospital, Romford and King George Hospital, Goodmayes, and to lead a team of reception staff including Associate Practitioner under the direction of Blood the Sciences Leads.
To contribute to providing a high quality, efficient, and cost-effective service working effectively as a team leader which supports the Trust objectives of high quality patient care. The post holder will be responsible for resource management within the specimen reception area with an emphasis on quality assurance and the maintenance of a well-trained and motivated workforce.
The post holder will be responsible for ensuring that all local and national policies relating to Blood Sciences Reception and good laboratory practice are implemented and observed by staff.
We provide care for the residents of three diverse London boroughs. Most of our 7,800 permanent staff live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge and the majority are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.
Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals and we operate from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London – more than 300,000 people visited our A&Es in 2023. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Community Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic, and Harold Wood Polyclinic.
We’re pleased to be leading the way inreducing the time our patientswait to get the treatment they need. The Elective Surgical Hub at King George Hospital is one of eight to beaccredited as part of a national scheme; the Care Quality Commission has raised the ratings for urgent and emergency care at Queen’s and King George hospitals; and data released by NHS England showed that the Trust was the most improved in 2023 for reducing waits for emergency care.
We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We’re also part of theNorth East London Cancer Alliance.
The successful candidate for the post will need to have an extensive knowledge of Specimen Reception processes, laboratory and information systems, plus a developed understanding of the requirements for UKAS and Quality Management Systems; they will need to be enthusiastic, maintain and develop high standards of quality and enjoy working as part of a team. A key part of this role will be reviewing services across sites in a view of harmonising practices and procedures.
The post holder will liaise closely with the Laboratory Managers and Clinical Leads, providing timely and accurate information concerning all aspects of service provision within their area.
