Job description

Find out how to become a Shared Lives carer to help make a difference in someone’s life and give full time carers a break.

Find out if you're eligible

To become a Shared Lives carer you must:

  • be over 18
  • rent or own your home and have a spare bedroom
  • want to meet new people and provide support and care
  • attend a detailed training programme

Who you’ll care for

As a Shared Lives carer you will provide support to:

  • people with physical or sensory impairments
  • adults with learning disabilities
  • older people (who may have dementia)
  • people experiencing mental health issues

You may also need to provide support in cases of illness or emergencies, for example when someone has been discharged from hospital.

How to apply

  1. Register your interest

If you would like to become a Shared Lives carer, first you will need to register your interest with us.

To do this either call 0113 378 5410 or email shared.lives@leeds.gov.uk

  2. Go through the suitability process

After you have registered your interest, you will need to go through the suitability process. This can last between three and six months.

During this time we will complete some checks on you, including:

    • a DBS check (disclosure and barring service)
    • medical references
    • professional and personal references
    • a health and safety assessment of your home
  3. Get matched to someone in need

If you pass the suitability process, you can become a Shared Lives carer. We will match you to someone in need of support based on what you can offer them. A first meeting will be arranged to make sure everyone is happy to go ahead.

Training is available after your approval to help you develop your skills. You must take a refresher training course every three years.

Payment for Shared Lives carers

Day support carers are paid on an hourly rate and short break carers are paid a fee for the type of support they provide. Both carers are classed as self-employed and will be expected to register with HMRC.
