We are a small, friendly diagnostic laboratory, and place a strong emphasis on client care and service quality. We are UKAS-accredited to the ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standard, and provide diagnostic services in clinical pathology, microbiology and molecular biology.
Our laboratory is staffed by trained and experienced Biomedical Scientists and three veterinary clinical pathologists
Our clients are predominantly first opinion companion animal clinics, the workload is interesting and varied.
The role
We are recruiting for a Veterinary Biomedical Scientist to join our Biochemistry team on a full time basis, on an initial 6 month contract, to potentially permanent contract at our Lab in Watford, Hertfordshire.
This is a full-time role, 40 hours per week on a rotating roster alternating Monday to Friday or Tuesday to Saturday every second week.
Duties include but are not limited to:
· To participate in the successful delivery of tests across the section
· Specimen arrival: Have knowledge of modes and times of specimen arrival into the laboratory; have knowledge and understanding of the sample processing steps in SPR
· Data entry: accurate and prompt entry of information into LIMS. Be competent to interrogate LIMS to retrieve pertinent information
· Recognise and troubleshoot problems as they arise, including with analytical equipment, specimen and reagent issues.
· Retrieve specimens from SPR. Sort and prepare specimens for diagnostic analysis according to the laboratory request
· Handle and action additional test requests from clients for specimens already received
· Document management: scan, file, send to shred in line with our GDPR commitments and laboratory policies
· Scrutinise and release results through the LIMS
· Assist Section Head in stock control and ordering · Maintain a tidy, clean, and safe working environment, with use of appropriate cleaning materials. · Analyser Maintenance: upon being trained and competent carry out required maintenance on the Biochemistry analysers, including running, advanced troubleshooting and reviewing iQCs, to ensure they are fit for analysis. · Sample analysis using automated systems: Load & unload samples on the relevant analysers. · Manual Assays: Carry out testing using the manual assays · Referral Specimens: Decant samples for external analysis, package accordingly and ensure they are given to SPR in a timely manner.

Your skills and experience
EXPERIENCE
- A minimum of 2 years’ experience in a high throughput diagnostic laboratory focusing on clinical chemistry
- Experience in the validation/review and release of reports
- Experience working within a quality management system
- Experience with the following, or similar, chemistry analysers would be an advantage: Siemens Immulite 2000 XPi and Beckman Coulter AU680/DxC700AU
- Experience processing veterinary specimens would be an advantage.
