Job description

Salary & Benefits: Salary £39,465 - £49,332 per annum dependant on experience, company car through company car lease scheme, annual bonus, attractive pension scheme (Up to 10% company contribution), life assurance cover of 4 times pensionable salary and 25 days annual leave, bank holidays plus a wellness day and development opportunities in line with the Bioresources Project Sponsor progression plan. Location: Based at Knostrop WWTW, Leeds with a flexible hybrid working arrangement and occasional site visits around the region when necessary


Work type: Permanent. 37 hours per week Monday to Friday


We have an exciting opportunity for a Project Sponsor to join the Bioresources Programme Team at Yorkshire Water to help deliver our AMP7 and AMP8 capital programmes to improve site and asset performance at our largest sludge treatment facilities in Yorkshire. Could this be you?

This role is a key part of the project team which requires a technical understanding of the sludge treatment asset base to ensure that we are delivering the right outcome for the business and the company, driving commercially advantageous decision making and enhancing Yorkshire Water’s Bioresources performance to minimise TOTEX costs and provide the best value to our customers against the changing regulatory landscape.


Where you fit in:


As our Project Sponsor you will: -


  • Use your technical knowledge of sludge treatment to provide solutions and develop project scope
  • Lead projects through definition phase, ensuring that possible solutions to asset performance shortfalls are fully investigated, utilising expert and partner resources as required. Ownership of the Business Case. Articulate the business need and the reasons why a selected solution is appropriate to meeting those needs, which will be required in securing the funding (TOTEX Board / PPMG / BIC) of the project and in agreeing the delivery of the solution.
  • Lead the projects as a technical lead from inception to delivery including throughout the Engineering assurance process
  • Work closely with the Bioresources Asset Management and Operational Management colleagues to identify asset risks or opportunities that potentially require additional intervention to resolve - through proactive liaison meetings to discuss risks, performance, and intervention plans.
  • be the technical site representative: understanding the asset and the site operations. Enable identification of and needs, requirements, hazards which may arise from planned work and mitigation of these though dynamic risk assessments.
  • Identify and lead the investigations into complex asset performance shortfalls or opportunities. Applying technical knowledge into engineering standards and strategy as well as specific asset solutions.
  • Ensure that robust financial management and commercial awareness are the foundation of all business decisions.
  • You will be responsible for understanding and undertaking the Management of Change to the asset base and ensuring that this is signed off prior to the project commencing to ensure that we are delivering assets fit to design requirements and standards and that integrated works are safe and reliable to operate.
  • Prepare the PCI at the earliest opportunity to ensure compliance with CDM Regs
  • Ensuring sign off and funding approval at Gate 1 and Gate 3 of the AMP7 process
  • Providing any required support to Gate 2 and Gate 4 financial approvals
  • Agree escalation triggers with the Project Team.
  • Specific Responsibilities within End-to-End Process.
  • Support the Project Manager during all project phases.
  • Agree scope of Investigation with Project Team ensuring it will provide the right information to confirm solution requirements at Gate 3.

What skills & qualifications you will need:


  • Engineering Qualification, technical degree or relevant equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of Bioresources asset base and its operation.
  • Risk Management experience (ideally IAM Certificate)
  • Detailed Understanding of Bioresources Performance Commitments and
  • Financial performance measures.
  • Influencing and negotiating skills and the ability to challenge.
  • Experience in End-to-End Business Process for Projects.
  • Relentless drive, energy and determination to deliver sustainable out performance for Bioresources which achieves our commercial vision.
  • Support and embed change, able to influence and drive the right culture and behaviours.
  • Good IT skills - AI2, AIB, EDMS, SAP, EDA/ DMF, Excel.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and able to work within and team or independently to challenging timescales.
  • Travel is required as part of this role; therefore, a full valid driving licence (No more than 6 points) is an essential requirement.

You will also benefit from having:


  • Experience of working with capital projects and the capital project delivery process
  • DMF system understanding including cost models, service measure framework, investment criteria.
  • Knowledge of the Engineering Design assurance process
