Job description

Summary

Historic England is the public body that helps people care for, enjoy and celebrate England's spectacular historic environment. Our work protecting historic places has proven benefits: from boosting wellbeing, civic pride, community connection, and economic opportunity to supporting heritage skills and helping to improve energy efficiency.

The Foundation was created in 2018 as an independent charity primarily to help Historic England raise funds for outstanding projects, and shares Historic England’s mission and values. It is led by a Chair and Board of Trustees and is supported by Historic England staff, primarily the Partnerships and Development team, with the Development Director acting as Secretary to the Foundation.

Please see the client prospectus, at the bottom of the advert, for more information.

Are you looking to contribute to innovative projects that protect the historic environment and improve people's lives?

Historic England Foundation are seeking three Trustees to join us.

As a trustee of the Historic England Foundation, you can play a crucial role in safeguarding our unrivalled heritage and shaping its future. The Foundation is a separate charity, closely aligned with Historic England’s mission. Its purpose is to augment Historic England’s impact by securing additional support for transformational projects, which would not otherwise happen.

What you will be doing:

  • Helping to lead the Foundation, ensuring that it is run in compliance with relevant legislation and regulations, and in line with the highest standards of governance, decision making and risk management.

  • Assisting in shaping and implementing the fundraising strategy of the Foundation, and in setting and monitoring performance against agreed fundraising targets.

  • Coordinating with Historic England staff to support fundraising approaches to individuals and organisations within their networks.

  • Acting as ambassadors for the Foundation, representing the charity at key meetings and facilitating networking opportunities with potential donors, grant-makers and corporate partners.

  • Advising on fundraising initiatives.

  • With support from Historic England staff, overseeing the financial governance of the charity including approving financial accounts, grant-making and ensuring donations are accepted in line with relevant policies.

Time commitment and expectations:

Trustees meet 3 or 4 times a year, online or in London, for formal board meetings during the working week. Papers are circulated 1-2 weeks ahead and trustees are asked to read and prepare for the meetings in advance (approximately 1-2 hours / meeting).

In consultation with Historic England staff, trustees use their networks to proactively make connections and funding opportunities.

Fundraising events take place throughout the year, which trustees are asked to attend and occasionally host. These are an engaging way to learn more about the work of Historic England, be part of current heritage debates, and provide valuable opportunities to introduce your networks to outstanding experts and sector leaders.

Additional ad-hoc meetings and email consultation with Historic England staff teams may also take place from time to time.

Trustees are usually asked to serve for a three-year term, with the option of extending this for a further three years.

Who we are looking for:

  • Interest in the historic environment: a genuine interest in heritage and the work of Historic England.

  • Networking and Philanthropy: engaging new and existing networks in building and sustaining relationships with high-value supporters. Campaign leadership experience and a track record of personally making or facilitating high-value donations is desirable.

  • Communication Skills: ability to confidently articulate Historic England’s mission, goals, and act as ambassadors to potential supporters.

  • Strategic Thinking: ability to advise on the development and implementation of fundraising strategies.

  • Financial Acumen: sound understanding of budgeting, financial planning, and reporting. Board members should be able to analyse financial data and make informed decisions about fundraising priorities.

  • Cultural Competence: Understanding and respecting diverse perspectives, cultures and values, especially when engaging with stakeholders from different backgrounds.

How to Apply:

Please complete the short recruitment registration form which includes answering two questions and uploading your CV.

We are an equal opportunity employer which values diversity and inclusion. If you have a disability or neurodiversity, we would be happy to discuss reasonable adjustments to the job with you. Having just won the Gold Award from MIND, we also recognise the importance of a healthy work-life balance.
