We are Smart DCC
Together we're building a greener tomorrow
Connecting every home and business to a single, secure smart meter network is a huge undertaking. So you can imagine the scale – and variety – and opportunities for the people who'll help us do it.

The role
Business Intelligence Developer with Smart DCC
Manchester
Competitive Salary plus benefits

Role
In our Data and Analytics team, we're focused on using data to drive our organization forward. Our organization is in search of a BI Developer with a strong focus on the creation of sophisticated data models to enhance our data-driven decision-making processes. In this pivotal role, you will be primarily responsible for designing, developing, and deploying BI solutions that empower our business with actionable insights, with a particular emphasis on crafting robust data models that serve as the foundation for insightful analytics and reporting.
As a BI Developer, your key duties will extend beyond traditional reporting; you will innovate and maintain complex data models that accurately represent business processes and support advanced analytics. You will use your expertise in data modelling to transform raw data into meaningful structures, optimizing the performance and scalability of our BI solutions. Mastery of SQL, experience with data modelling tools, and proficiency in BI platforms such as Power BI are critical for success in this role.
Your role will involve close collaboration with business stakeholders to understand their analytical needs, translating these requirements into technical solutions that leverage your data models to provide deep insights into business metrics. You will not only design and build BI reports and dashboards but also ensure the underlying data models are accurately capturing the nuances of our business operations.
The effectiveness of our BI initiatives relies heavily on your ability to create data models that are both comprehensive and adaptable to changing business needs. Additionally, you will be tasked with maintaining and refining these models, along with the broader BI infrastructure, to ensure ongoing relevance and efficiency.
This BI Developer position is ideal for those who are not just technically proficient but also possess a deep understanding of how data shapes business outcomes. Your contributions will be crucial in enabling more informed decision-making across the organization. If you have a passion for turning data into a strategic asset and are skilled in the art of data modelling, this role offers a significant opportunity to impact our operations and drive success.

What will you be doing?

  • Database Development:

1. Design and architect database schemas tailored to specific business requirements, considering factors such as data volume, query complexity, and reporting needs.
2. Develop and optimize SQL queries, stored procedures, functions, and triggers to support ad-hoc analysis, reporting, and data manipulation operations.
3. Implement indexing strategies, partitioning techniques, and database optimizations to enhance query performance and resource utilization.

  • Business Intelligence Tool Development:

1. Design, develop, and maintain interactive and visually appealing BI dashboards, reports, and analytical applications using industry-standard BI tools such as Microsoft Power BI and similar tools
2. Implement advanced analytics techniques such as predictive modelling, clustering, and forecasting within BI solutions to uncover actionable insights from data.

  • Data Modelling:

1. Design and implement dimensional data models (e.g., star schema,) optimized for analytical querying and reporting purposes.
2. Define logical and physical data models that align with business processes, ensuring consistency, maintainability, and scalability.

  • Collaboration and Support:

1. Engage with business stakeholders, data analysts, and subject matter experts to elicit and refine BI requirements, translate business needs into technical specifications, and prioritize development efforts accordingly.
2. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data engineers, data scientists, and IT administrators, to integrate BI solutions with existing systems, align data governance policies, and ensure seamless data flow across the organization.
3. Communicate project status updates, risks, and dependencies to key stakeholders, proactively addressing issues, mitigating risks, and escalating concerns as necessary to ensure successful project outcomes and stakeholder satisfaction.

  • Continuous Improvement:

1. Stay abreast of emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in the field of Business Intelligence, attending conferences, webinars, and professional development courses to enhance technical skills and domain expertise.
2. Solicit feedback from stakeholders, conduct post-implementation reviews, and iterate on BI solutions iteratively based on user feedback, evolving business needs, and changing market dynamics.

What are we looking for?

  • Advanced proficiency in database technologies such as SQL Server, Oracle, or PostgreSQL for data manipulation and querying.
  • Expertise in ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes using tools like SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services), Informatica, or Talend to ensure efficient data movement and transformation.
  • Strong understanding of data warehousing concepts, dimensional modelling, and schema design for building and maintaining data warehouses or data marts.
  • Proficiency in BI development tools such as Power BI, or QlikView for creating interactive dashboards, reports, and data visualizations.
  • Advanced skills in programming languages like Python, R, or Java for data analysis, manipulation, and automation tasks.
  • Experience with cloud-based BI platforms like AWS Redshift or Azure Synapse Analytics for scalable and flexible data solutions.
  • Knowledge of data governance, security, and compliance standards to ensure data integrity and privacy.
  • Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather requirements, design data solutions, and deliver BI projects.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to troubleshoot data issues, optimize queries, and improve performance.
  • Proficiency in version control systems such as Git for managing codebase and collaborating with other developers.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies for software development and project management.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and collaborate with team members.
  • Ability to stay updated with emerging technologies, trends, and best practices in the field of Business Intelligence and data analytics.
  • Strong attention to detail and quality assurance mindset to ensure accuracy and reliability of BI solutions.
  • Initiative and drive to continuously improve skills and learn new technologies in the evolving field of BI development.
  • University degree or equivalent experience in business or a STEM subject and experience in a relevant regulated industry would be beneficial.
