Job description

An exciting opportunity for a Cable Design & Costings Engineer has arisen with our leading utilities company based in Belfast.

The role is Permanent.

Very competitive salary between £45,480 - £57,438 based on experience. Plus many company benefits.

THE ROLE:

The successful candidate will be responsible for the delivery of the client's Network Capital Investment Programme and Customer Connections. It is also responsible for the maintenance of the existing Substation and Overhead Line Assets and responding to fault and emergency situations. The Engineering Design Department plays a key role in the design of transmission and distribution substation, overhead line and underground cable projects, to support the delivery of the clients Capital Investment Programme and major Customer Connections. The candidate will prepare costs for projects, participation in procurement, providing technical advice for specifications and assisting in developing engineering design strategies.

The successful candidate will assist the day-to-day activities of Cable Design, with specific focus in ensuring that Asset Management Plans are implemented effectively, providing accurate cost estimates for customer projects, and dealing with general network queries, whilst at the same time ensuring that the works comply with all relevant legislation and policies.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Ensuring the safety of staff, contractors and the public is given priority at all times. This includes the application of Construction Design & Management (CDM) Regulations, producing design risk assessments and effectively communicating risks to staff and contractors. Complete site safety engagements

• Completing internal designs and reviewing consultants and Independent Connections Provider (ICP) designs.

• Completing cable system design calculations including cable sizing assessments.

• Ensure that work is effectively managed, maximising productivity and minimising costs, and achieving agreed outputs defined in the Investment Plans

• Ensuring that Framework agreements are in place for all materials required for project works on the Network. Including technical assessment of tender submissions, factory acceptance tests and technical assessments.

• Ensuring continual development of new processes, systems and delivery of change to support the business.

• Drive industry best practice and technological advances within the cables team helping evaluate new technical developments.

• Ensuring compliance with all applicable law, codes and standards including safety, health and environmental.

• Producing drawings, specifications, technical documents, cost estimates, materials procurement and field files for network projects and in line with Asset Management Instructions and Asset Management Strategy.

• Develop effective working relationships

• Manage and prioritise work and contribute to improving processes

• Anticipate and analyse problems and provide sound solutions

• Be self-motivated and capable of motivating and developing others to achieve targets and work together. Work in a team and enhance the performance of that team

• Attending sites for inspection and design purposes.

Essential Criteria:

• HNC/Degree or equivalent in Electrical / Electronic Engineering or other relevant subject.

• A minimum of 2 years’ experience in the design of transmission and distribution cable systems.

• Working/practical knowledge of cable system design and construction types at all voltage levels. This will include the cable, termination, joints, earthing bonding and the trench design.

• Working/practical knowledge in cable rating software CYMCAP, Cableizer, ELEK or equivalent software.

• Working/practical knowledge of cable new build and sub-station refurbishment construction methods at all voltages. This will include experience of the selection of suitable cable routes.

• Working/practical knowledge of producing and interpreting design reports, and construction field files.

• Experience of producing detailed cost estimates for cable projects.

• Experience with cable easements and wayleaves.

• Working/practical knowledge of carrying out Designer duties under the CDM Regulations.

• Working/practical knowledge of relevant British / European Normative standards, International Electrotechnical Commission standards, Energy Networks Association standards, and National Grid standards / NIRAUC / technical specifications.

• Current Driving Licence

Desirable Criteria:

• A working knowledge of the electricity utility’s Safety Rules.

• Proven experience of working within design and construction teams, dealing with all manner of issues arising at different stages of a project.

• Previous experience of reviewing and appraising materials suppliers against relevant specifications and design requirements as appropriate.

• Developed knowledge of underground fibre optic systems including installation splicing and terminating.

• Working/practical knowledge of identifying and overcoming special engineering difficulties such as railway and river crossings and poor ground conditions.

• Experience of participation in procurement including producing technical specifications, schedules of work, tender assessment and responding to technical queries.

• An appreciation of The Electricity (NI) Order 1992, and the associated requirements.

• Experienced in developing cable system designs and the nuances between distribution voltages and transmission voltages.

• Knowledge of different types of insulated cables over and above XLPE e.g., fluid filled cable
