What you’ll do

As part of JLR’s future propulsion strategy, the powertrain team requires casting development expertise to create make to print designs, which meet the future challenges of reduced mass, increased efficiency, and reduction in environmental impact.

The casting Technology Chapter Lead will lead a team of experts to centralise the required knowledge within powertrain and ensure a standardise approach is deployed across the whole department. The chapter will serve as a consultancy to the whole of powertrain to ensure the highest standards of design are achieved.

 

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

The Chapter Lead will be responsible for leading the following activities relating to casting within the powertrain department:

 

  1. Development of Technology Roadmap
    • Benchmarking of new technology in literature and competitors’ products through supplier presentations, teardown activities, in-house research projects and review of publications, conference proceedings and other public domain sources.
    • Leading collaborative research projects to maximise value to JLR (e.g. Advanced Propulsion Centre, PhD’s).
    • Liaison with key suppliers to develop technology roadmap and support standards development.
    • Generation of the technology roadmap for future casting developments

 

  1. Managing core technical knowledge
    • Ownership of core Design Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (DFMEA), including related documents (e.g. boundary and interface analysis).
    • Development / management of engineering requirements / design rules / test cases / test procedures.
    • Supervision, mentoring and technical training of engineers completing tasks relating to the component.
    • Development of technical training for the department.

 

  1. Design and CAE
    • Standardise the design approach within JLR.
    • Working with CAD engineers to generate models and drawings, and associated drawing checks.
    • Development of CAE tools / methodologies relating to component, alongside relevant specialists.
    • Co-ordination of CAE test cases.

 

  1. Root cause investigation and resolution of engineering issues
    • Root cause analysis and resolution of issues during development / launch / in production using 8D / Six Sigma Methodology and management of issues in relevant system.
    • Coaching of other department members in Six Sigma methodology
    • Completion of Prevent Recurrence Actions

 

 

  1. Supplier interface support
    • Support development and appraisal of tier 1 supplier proposals
    • Supporting regular supplier meetings when technical direction is required.
    • Manage relationship with prototype casting suppliers.

 

What you’ll need

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential:

  • Recognised expert with excellent technical understanding of casting design
  • Experience applying technical expertise to delivered projects with demonstrated ability to plan and execute.
  • Experience identifying and assessing and deploying new technology opportunities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with strong mentoring, influencing, know-how transfer, presentation and reporting skills.
  • Knowledge of statistical Problem Solving and Design Tools
  • Substantial experience of casting processes
  • Experience of JLR product creation & delivery, product definition and change management processes.
  • Masters or higher degree qualified.
