Casual Basketball Coach

We welcome applications for this support post to commence early September 2024.

The Role

The successful candidate will become part of a thriving, lively and supportive department. The department comprises 14 staff members, some of which are part time.

The department is accessed by students from across college and serves the whole college community.

The Sport and Physical Education Department at Cardinal Newman Catholic Sixth Form College offers a range of Sports Academies. These academies offer talented students in the range of sports the opportunity to combine a training and competitive experience to sit alongside their chosen academic programme of study. Students can combine a range of academic subjects, including A level and BTEC and this is tailored to suit individual needs. This is not restricted purely to sports programmes.

The sports academy programmes aim to develop team and individual performance, weekly aspects involve match analysis, match preparation training and competitive league and cup fixtures on a Wednesday afternoon. Since the Sports Academies were first established in 1999, there have been notable successes. The Boys Football Academy have been national champions twice, the Netball Academy have won numerous national competitions including the English National Schools three years in a row. The Basketball Academy have also been national finalists.

The main duties and responsibilities of this role include –

  • To take the Basketball teams on Wednesday afternoons and at other times
  • To take teams to AOC Sports events
  • To arrange and confirm fixtures
  • To book transport and referees for teams
  • To organise payment for the referees.

The Successful Candidate

Cardinal Newman College is a wonderful place to work, and this is an exciting opportunity for a enthusiastic and experienced candidate to join our friendly and well established Sport department.

The Sport department is looking for someone who has a Level 2 Coaching Qualification, a minimum of 2 years’ experience of Basketball Coaching and posses self direction and motivation.

You should display the values, attitudes, and behaviours consistent with the Catholic Ethos of the College and have a commitment to equality/diversity and the safeguarding of young people and vulnerable adults.

Terms and Conditions

Hours: 8.5 hours per week from early September to early-May. Working hours are in line with training and fixtures as outlined below:

  • Monday 8.30am - 10.30am
  • Wednesday 12.15pm - 16.15pm
  • Thursday 14.30pm - 17.00pm

Salary: £22 per hour plus holiday pay. Salary is paid on a claim basis for hours worked
