Chair of the Board, Cornwall Housing

Location: Bodmin, Cornwall (agile working available)

Salary: £11,000 p.a. (time commitment 3-4 days/month)

Why?

In 2020, concerns were raised by the then newly appointed Chair about the operational delivery of CHL. Working closely with the Chair and other stakeholders, the council undertook a full review and a number of areas for improvement were identified, which included improvements in the delivery of health and safety compliance, governance arrangements and the suitability of the management team. Much progress has been made since the original concerns were raised and CHL has an ambitious but long term plan that will ensure that excellent services are once again delivered. However, there is still much to do and the Regulatory Notice issued when concerns were first raised remains in place reflecting the scale of the ongoing work to move services from failing, to adequate, to good and then beyond.

Plenty has been done thus far- a new Executive Team has been appointed, the Board has been refreshed and there is a great relationship with the Council.  As the incumbent Chair comes to the end of his tenure, a new Chair is required to maintain CHL’s focus on service improvement. You will ensure the right issues are being discussed at the right times and all voices are heard.

You will support and challenge the management team and work with them to maintain the right course. You will be an effective ambassador for CHL, with the Council but also across the wider community and resident body. You will be an inclusive leader and promote a Board culture of ‘healthy challenge’. Finally and perhaps most importantly you will have a vested interest in improving the lives of the people of Cornwall and in particular the diverse range of individuals that live in social housing.

Who would excel in this role?

A values driven leader with proven track record on a Board (but not necessarily a Chair) Ability and vision to lead and represent the CHL, giving a clear sense of strategic direction, a clear appreciation of the respective roles of the Chair and Managing Director and the need to create and sustain strong partnerships. A good understanding of the social housing sector and ALMO sub-sector and the current and future challenges it faces. Works well in a team, with a collaborative style that engages people at all levels and promotes positive relationships throughout the organisation and its partners.
