SalaryWe want the charity to be able to work successfully in partnership with the Trust, but also to have the autonomy to attract the best trustees and to maximise fundraising and impact. For this reason, we have just taken the decision that the charity, which is currently governed by the Trust as corporate trustee, will become an independent charity.
We are therefore looking for an exceptional leader, familiar with the NHS context and with charities. You will join the Charitable Funds Committee now as the Chair Designate and become the Chair of the independent charity in due course, likely mid/late 2024. You will be key to shaping the new opportunities for the charity and you will lead the appointment of a Board of Trustees for the charity and work with them and the Trust to set the charity’s new strategy and work with the staff to deliver it.
The Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust is also evolving with anever greater collaboration with Barts Health NHS Trust. The charity Chair designate will have the support of the very successful Barts Charity and will be able to work alongside them.
King George & Queen’s Hospitals Charity is the NHS Charity supporting Barking, Havering & Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT) and the Trust’s staff and clinical teams - to deliver even better health and care for patients and their families. The Trust comprises two local hospitals: King George Hospital in Ilford and Queen’s Hospital in Romford, and together they employ over 8,000 staff who treat thousands of patients every year. Some of the hospitals’ patients have life-limiting or life-threatening conditions or rare, complex and serious illnesses.
The charity’s aim is to fundraise to give patients better care and a better experience, including the provision of the most up-to-date medical equipment, better support services for patients and their families, and essential refurbishment of the staff areas. Other areas supported include patient welfare, staff welfare, research and general charitable hospital purposes in accordance with the objectives of the Charity. The Charity does not subsidise the core responsibilities of the NHS, but enhances the essential services provided by them to make the hospital journey the best it can be for everyone.
Charitable donations to the hospitals fall into four categories:
- Medical equipment
- Information & technology
- Comfort & the environment
- Research & training
We provide care for the residents of three diverse London boroughs. Most of our 8000 permanent staff live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge and the majority are from Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.
Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals and we operate from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London – more than 300,000 people visited our A&Es in 2023. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Community Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic, and Harold Wood Polyclinic.
We’re pleased to be leading the way in reducing the time our patients wait to get the treatment they need. The Elective Surgical Hub at King George Hospital is one of eight to be accredited as part of a national scheme; the Care Quality Commission has raised the ratings for urgent and emergency care at Queen’s and King George hospitals; and data released by NHS England showed that the Trust was the most improved in 2023 for reducing waits for emergency care.
We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We’re also part of the North East London Cancer Alliance.
