Job description

The Chair is responsible for the effectiveness of the Trustee Board, and provides leadership and direction for Active Cheshire. It is not the Chair’s job to run the organisation, but rather to ensure that it is well run by deploying strong governance arrangements.

We strive to have an exciting, broad range of voices on our Board, people who share our values and vision and who can bring their varying life experiences and skills to our work.

We value both your lived experience and your perspective, as much as professional experience. We’re looking for personal attributes to lead and complement our existing board and create an effective team.

Responsibilities

In addition to the general responsibilities of a trustee and being an ambassador for Active Cheshire the duties of the Chair include:

Governance

  • Lead the Trustee Board by preparing for, chairing and following up on meetings, in a way that ensures meetings are effective, and bring out the best of all trustees and the Chief Executive (CEO)
  • Drive and embed a culture of transparency, openness, challenge and performance
  • Ensure that Active Cheshire operates within its Articles of Association, and according to charity law and Tier 3 of the Sport England’s Code of Sports Governance
  • Develop the Trustee Board including recruitment, annual board review, annual appraisal for Trustees, succession planning and appropriate training
  • Work in partnership with Trustees and liaise with the CEO, senior staff, advisers and other key stakeholders.

Strategic Vision

Oversee development and regular review of strategy for Active Cheshire, taking into account the challenges and opportunities facing the organisation, and with input from the CEO.

Relationship with the CEO

  • Meet the CEO regularly in order to keep up to date about issues which require Board consideration and action
  • Ensure that the CEO manages Active Cheshire’s business and implements the decisions of the Trustee Board in a prompt, effective manner
  • Work with the CEO on the preparation of agendas and content for board meetings
  • Build a relationship of trust and openness, providing appropriate support and challenge, acting as a sounding board for the CEO’s proposals and ideas
  • With the Trustee Board/Nomination Committee set annual objectives and provide formal performance appraisal

Time Commitment

The time commitment below has been prepared following a review of the current role, however this may vary:

  • Four Trustee Board Meetings per year, including preparatory work and follow up
  • Four Nomination Committee Meetings per year
  • Two other strategy/planning days
  • Regular contact with the CEO
  • One to one contact with each Trustee annually
  • Representation of Active Cheshire at external events/meetings as required

The term of the initial appointment is four years (subject to satisfactory performance).
