Job description

Eton Bridge Partners is delighted to have been engaged by Pilotlight, the UK-based not-for-profit organisation, to appoint a new Chair of Trustees. Pilotlight helps charities to be more effective and have a greater impact by bringing charities together with businesses and business experts who can help tackle the pressing issues charities are facing.

The current Chair is reaching the end of her term later this year and Pilotlight is seeking to bring someone on board who can help grow the organisation's impact even further. We are keen to connect with people from a wide variety of backgrounds who can combine a strong commercial understanding with a passion for Pilotlight’s mission.

The commitment they are seeking will be two or three days a month, with the need to be in the London office no more than three times a year. This will be a pro bono position.

Key Accountabilities

Trustees play a vital role in the work of Pilotlight, sharing skills as a Director and acting as a champion for its work. The Chair is asked to lead the Board to govern, but not manage, the charity and to delegate, but not abdicate, its duties under law – including to:

  • Provide leadership to the Board and to ensure that trustees fulfil their duties and responsibilities for the proper governance of the charity.
  • Support and challenge the Chief Executive and executive team, ensuring the Board as a whole works in partnership with executive staff.
  • Act as an ambassador for the charity with external stakeholders, helping make new connections with future corporate partners.
  • Get the most from the broad spectrum of skills and experience available to the leadership team through the Board.
  • Bring cohesion and a more unified identity and voice to the Board in guiding the exec team on execution and ensuring accountability for the strategic milestones agreed.  

Personal Qualities

  • Experience of undertaking a leadership or emerging leadership level role in a commercial environment Experience of, or appetite for, helping organisations to develop​.
  • Passionate about developing and motivating high-performing teams​.
  • Lived experience of or empathy for the needs of people living in poverty​.
  • Self-aware with emotional intelligence, creativity, drive, resilience and integrity.
  • Enthusiasm and commitment to champion the work and mission of Pilotlight and to act in line with its values - connecting, unlocking and demanding.
  • An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of Trusteeship.
  • An effective team player, able to work collaboratively, with tact and integrity Independent judgement, able to listen, to think strategically, to find creative solutions and willing to speak your mind or challenge where needed.
