Location: Hybrid working, to include all Lakeland Arts sites in Bowness and Kendal, Cumbria

Who we are

Lakeland Arts is one of the most remarkable arts and heritage organisations in the north. We look after an exceptional portfolio of museums and collections in an area of outstanding natural beauty, which has inspired generations, from Wordsworth via Kurt Schwitters to Taylor Swift. This cultural and natural heritage attracts audiences from all over the world.

The staff at Lakeland Arts come from all walks of life, backgrounds and interests but have one thing in common – connecting people with outstanding art and heritage in a world-class cultural landscape.

In your new role, you will work in some of the most beautiful buildings and locations in Cumbria and you can expect to feel a real sense of pride in the job you do, every single day.

About the role

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Lakeland Arts will spearhead commercial activities, seeking new income sources with an entrepreneurial mindset. Responsible for continuous improvement, the COO will lead both strategic and hands-on initiatives, managing the team and collaborating with programming colleagues to identify and support income potential. As a key member of the leadership team, the COO will play a vital role in Lakeland Arts' strategic development, acting as Deputy to the Chief Executive.

Your responsibilities will include leading business planning, providing financial leadership, overseeing operations, and managing commercial and operational risks. With oversight of all Lakeland Arts sites, the COO will lead the Head of Visitor Experience and Estates Manager, ensuring operational excellence and environmental sustainability. Additionally, the COO will manage IT systems, advise on digital capabilities, and contribute to Lakeland Arts' overall success by delivering a high-quality visitor experience.

Who we are looking for

Lakeland Arts seeks a COO with a proven track record in successful commercial strategies and operational management within visitor attractions or arts venues. The ideal candidate will possess significant leadership experience, demonstrating expertise in developing organisational strategies, financial management, and budgeting. A passion for arts, galleries, and museums is essential, along with exceptional communication and negotiation skills.

The COO should excel in building relationships, influencing stakeholders, and implementing positive changes. Strong people skills, commitment to Equal Opportunities and EDI, and a dedication to outstanding customer service are crucial. The COO should be a self-motivated team player with an entrepreneurial spirit, fostering collaboration for resource optimisation and income generation at Lakeland Arts.
