Birmingham City University Chief/Standard Invigilator
Role and Responsibilities
As a Chief/Standard invigilator your role and responsibilities will include:
- Ensuring exams are conducted in an appropriate manner in accordance with University policy
- Preparing examination rooms to ensure that it meets requirements
- Ensuring that exam conditions are always adhered to
- Monitoring students to ensure that there is no misconduct during exams
- Answering any queries that a student might have in a timely and professional manner
- Ensuring a calm environment which will give students the best possible opportunity to be successful in their exams
- Providing support where necessary should an emergency arise e.g. a student falls ill, fire evacuation
- Reporting in the event of any discrepancy or irregularity in the progress of an exam directly to the Chief invigilator and Student Lifecycle team
In addition to the above Chief invigilators are responsible, in collaboration with the Student Lifecycle team, for the overall supervision of exam rooms during their shift and for ensuring that all invigilators adhere to the specified roles and responsibilities.
Qualifications Required
Exam invigilators are not required to hold any recognised qualifications, but are required to have:
- A good command of written and spoken English
- Sound oral and written communication skills
- Good IT and administrative skills
- Good organisational skills
- Attend an invigilator training session prior to your first shift
- Previous experience as an invigilator, or similar is desirable (Chief invigilator only)
Personal Qualities
An exam invigilator needs to be:
- Confident and able to communicate with staff and students
- Able to work as a team, with the ability to work on their own initiative
- Able to carry out core duties without direct supervision
- Able to manage/direct large groups of young people
- Able to work in an organised and structured way
- Able to seek help where appropriate
