Job summary
The Children and Young people can present with chronic constipation, impaction, faecal incontinence, day wetting, enuresis, and toilet training needs, in addition to requiring skilled nursing intervention to manage highly complex health and developmental needs throughout childhood and during transition to adult services.

Main duties of the job
Our Children's Continence Nurse Specialists deliver nurse-led clinics and are required to provide specialist knowledge, skills and leadership to ensure high quality child centred care. We work closely with social care and education and we are involved closely with partners in developing Children and Young people care pathways.
  • To manage a clinical caseload of children with complex continence care needs, providing continence clinics in a variety of settings, maintaining accurate clinical records and data required by the service
  • Support and educate staff offering specialist clinical knowledge and skills for the delivery of continence care for children within the CYPCT caseload, facilitating access to expert specialist knowledge and skills as needed
  • To keep accurate, legible, contemporaneous records and written reports as required, with proficient knowledge of information governance. Ensure concise and accurate documentation of care interventions, including telephone advice and support are documented and recorded
  • Help develop, implement and review clinical protocols and standard operating procedures which assist in delivering safe care and best nursing practice
  • Be responsible for decisions made regarding clinical need when assessing individual children who have specific product need
  • Participate in the procurement process of the contract for continence products representing Children and Young People's needs as being part of the overall continence contract

We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 6 Children andYoung People's Continence Nurse Specialist to join our well-established, national award-winning Children and Young People's Continence team, based in Lancing. The post is for 30 hours a week, within our integrated team of Nurse Specialists, Enuresis Nurses and Continence Associate Practitioners. The post holder will have a key role in delivering specialist children's continence care for the Children and Young people on the team caseload.
The Children and Young People's (CYP) Continence team covers the whole of West Sussex with the addition of Brighton and Hove since early 2018, providing nurse clinics and specialist nurse advice and care for Children and Young people with Tier 2 continence needs. The CYP Continence team is aligned to the Children and Young People's Community Nursing Services within the Trust.

Organise, plan and prioritise work according to service needs with a responsibility for supporting other team members when planning service delivery.
Support and educate staff offering specialist clinical knowledge and skills for the delivery of continence care for children within the CYPCT caseload, facilitating access to expert specialist knowledge and skills as needed.
To keep accurate, legible, contemporaneous records and written reports as required, with proficient knowledge of information governance. Ensure concise and accurate documentation of care interventions, including telephone advice and support are documented and recorded.
To be responsible for maintaining clinical and managerial standards and be responsible for participation in audits to ensure a high standard of practice is achieved, at both service and Trust wide level
Help develop, implement and review clinical protocols and standard operating procedures which assist in delivering safe care and best nursing practice.
Be responsible for decisions made regarding clinical need when assessing individual children who have specific product need.
Participate in the procurement process of the contract for continence products representing Children and Young peoples needs as being part of the overall continence contract.
Staff may be required to work anywhere in Sussex in order to meet the needs of the commissioned service. To promote and demonstrate best practice, integrating evidence based practice, using an advanced level of clinical reasoning and clinical judgements
Practise child centred care, incorporating appropriate ethical and moral dimensions to practice
Participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of research based nursing practice, policies, protocols and guidelines on continence care. Assist with the implementation of national standards and guidance on childrens continence care
Provide caseload monitoring and support to team clinicians, to help to analyse relevant service data which will demonstrate activity of the team and assist with identifying service needs and possible developments.
Contribute to evaluating clinical effectiveness of care and in consultation with Head of CCN and senior nurses in the wider CYPCN service, make adjustments where appropriate in order to make the best use of team and SCT resources.
Assist the Safeguarding Team and CYPCN Service in co-ordinating child protection processes in accordance with Trust policy whilst supporting team staff in understanding and exercising the Trust safeguarding policy and Sussex procedures; attending case conferences, other meetings and partnership working as required
Responsibility for own professional development attending mandatory and other training as agreed in the PDR process and as required by the Trust
Recognises own professional boundaries and develops awareness of roles and areas of expertise of other health professionals and agencies
Ensure health records are maintained and compliant with Trust policy and keep accurate, legible, contemporaneous records and written reports as required.
Ensure when aware of clinical incidents in practice that these are reported via the correct channels and investigate as per policy, ensuring the implementation of relevant recommendations.
To pay regard to Trust materials and equipment; those pertinent to the team include portable bladder scanners, enuresis alarms and accessories.
To demonstrate responsible use of resources, with an awareness of budgetary restraints by maintaining and improving services and systems, monitoring and controlling costs and activities against the budget to enhance value.

Person Specification
Qualifications /Registration
Essential
  • Registered childrens Nurse
  • Registered Nurse with recent evidence of woorking within a community specialism of children & young people; with an interest in childrens continence
  • Degree in Specialist Community Nursing/ SCPHN or other appropriate nursing degree e.g. Childrens Nurse Practitioner/ Child Health orrecent evidence of working within the specilaism of childrens continence and the ability to demonstrate working towards specialist qualification in continence

Desirable
  • Module in Child Protection/Safeguarding children
  • ENB998/Mentorship Module or equivalent

Experience
Essential
  • Minimum of 2 years post registration clinical experience at band 5
  • Experience of managing a caseload of children within a community setting and / or on a childrens ward
  • Experience of teaching /health promotion
  • Experience of working in partnership with other with other allied health, social,education and volunteer agencies
  • Experience of working with Children and families/carers
  • Experience of mentoring students and junior staff

  • Evidence of relevant post registration professional development
  • Experience of clinical audit
