Job overview

Transport for London (TfL’s) Asset Operations Team are the heart of operations across TfL’s roads, bus and river assets. From Tunnels and Traffic Signals to tree planting to looking after facilities for our bus drivers, no day is ever the same in Asset Operations. You will gain first-hand knowledge of how assets are managed and operated in a fast paced, dynamic environment.

Our department combines the asset responsibilities across Surface, so we engage with many stakeholders and contractors across the business and London.

Our assets can be broadly grouped into these areas: highways and traffic infrastructure, bus infrastructure, environmental, structures, tunnels, and river piers (just about everything above ground that is not on a railway is our responsibility to maintain).

The Asset Operations apprenticeship is an exciting three-year developmental programme for people who want to make London safer, more inclusive, and sustainable.

On this programme, you will develop valuable skills and gain a broad range of experience and understanding of asset operations, maintenance, the environment, and London’s roads.

What will I be doing?

Subject to availability of placements during your apprenticeship:

Tunnels / Pumps / Piers

You will assist our team of engineers in all facets of maintenance of our Road Tunnels, Pump Stations and River Piers. Looking at the various Mechanical / Electrical and Communication systems deployed across this fascinating and varied asset base. This includes lighting and ventilation systems, variable message signs, over-height vehicle detection, CCTV, safety cameras, fire detection, storm water pumps and automatic tunnel closure systems. You will be involved in the day-to-day upkeep and minor upgrades of these safety critical systems, including the operating and alarm systems behind them like HORUS, Scada and Aquaview. You will also get to challenge yourself specifying and managing delivery of works ranging from a CCTV camera replacement in a Tunnel, upgrading a Pump Station right through to dredging works on the river Thames to maintain safe passage for marine traffic.

Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Operations

Millions of daily bus, walking, cycling, and car journeys rely on a safe and efficient road network, and this technology is integral to TfL’s mission. You will also get involved in analysing and optimising the performance of communications IP networks; specifying minor upgrades and challenging our contractors on their works delivery; be responsive to real-time incidents that our Network Management Control Centre or colleagues in Buses need support with; and improve your soft skills and technical abilities by working closely with Tech and Data on our systems
